Checking Your Attic for Damage

4/29/2019 (Permalink)

Attics can be a problem area when it comes to water damage. It’s one of the main places where damage from heavy rainfall can occur, and then mold becomes a concern. Your attic is one of the places in your home that you won’t visit regularly; usually, a trip up to the attic is only made when you need something you have put up for a rainy day. It’s important to check your attic area periodically for leaks and water damage, especially after winter or other rainy seasons, according to your geographic location.

Some houses have water heaters in the attic, and they are known to leak as they age. Your attic will also take the brunt of storms, right along with your roof. When the roof sustains damage such as loose or missing roofing material, you will probably see water stains in the attic, letting you know a problem is developing.

Follow these tips to help you keep on top of any damage to your attic:

  • Check your attic for damage regularly. It’s important to assess your attic space as often as you check other parts of your home. You’ll want to make sure this area isn’t holding water, which can spread to problems with your interior ceilings.
  • Check your roofing after severe weather. It’s crucial to check all roofing after a strong storm and/or high winds to ensure it is still intact.
  • Make sure your water heater is working properly. If your water heater isn’t functioning properly or if it has seen better days, have it checked by a professional. A malfunctioning water heater can flood your home and cause major property damage.

Here at SERVPRO of Brunswick, we are always ready to help with cleanup after water and fire damage and are experts in the area of mold remediation.

Kitchen Fire - How to Prepare

4/28/2019 (Permalink)

A kitchen fire can happen in an instant, with no warning. If that happens, you will need to act fast to keep the fire from getting out of control. Take stock of what kind of fire you have and where it is. Here are a few tips on what to do:

  • If it’s a fire in the oven, close the door immediately and turn off the oven. Leave the door closed! Lack of oxygen will suffocate the flames.
If the oven continues to smoke and you think the fire may have continued, call the fire department right away.
  • When it is a fire in a cooking pan or pot, use your oven mitt to put the lid on right away, and move it off the burner. Turn off the stove and wait for the lack of oxygen to stop the flames inside your pot.
If you are not able to safely put the lid on the flaming pan, or if there is no lid readily available, use your fire extinguisher. Always aim at the base of the fire, not the flames themselves.
  • Never use water to put out a grease fire! Water repels grease and can spread the fire by splattering the grease. Try one of these methods instead:
If the fire is small, put on the lid and turn off the burner.
Throw lots of baking soda on it. Do not use flour; it can explode or make the fire even worse. Smother the fire with a wet towel or other large, wet cloth. Use a fire extinguisher.
Swatting the fire with a towel, apron, or other material is likely to fan the flames and spread the fire.
  • If the fire is spreading and you don’t have control, get every person and pet out of the house and call 911!

If your home is damaged by a kitchen fire with soot, smoke damage, and water damage give SERVPRO of Brunswick a call to make it “Like it never even happened”

3 Most Common Places for Water Damages

4/23/2019 (Permalink)

While flooding often can’t be predicted, educating yourself on the most common areas to flood with help you be prepared to handle such an event, and even to prevent it! Some areas of your home or business are going to be more apt to experience water damage than others, such as rooms that have sinks, as in kitchens, bathrooms, and laundry areas; low-lying areas like basements and cellars are also at risk.

Here is a list of the three most common areas to suffer from water damage:

BATHROOMS: The bathroom is possibly the most likely area to flood, and probably the most obvious. After all, a bathroom is all about water! Sinks, toilets, showers and tubs...all involve H20, and all contained in one small area and connected to pipes, pipes that can be a source of problems if they become clogged, leak, or wear out. Human error can create an issue as well; we’ve all heard stories about the bath that got started and was forgotten about!

BASEMENTS: Basements and cellars are the lowest part of a house or building, and so have a number of easy entry points for water. If there is heavy rainfall during inclement weather, or if the building is near a body of water such as a lake or river, they are going to be in danger. Oftentimes the pipes for the bath and kitchen areas run through the basement, and sump pumps and drains are often found there. In addition, many homes have their water heating unit and laundry facilities in their basement or cellar. Keep an eye open for cracks in the foundation, ceiling, and walls of these areas!

ATTICS AND ROOFS: A damaged roof, either from weather or fire, is susceptible to water damage and flooding the areas underneath. A small leak can turn into a big problem fast!

Our team of professionals here at SERVPRO of Brunswick is experienced in repairs and cleanup from damages caused by water, fire, and mold. Call us at (912) 264-6094

Historic Flooding in Omaha.

4/1/2019 (Permalink)

Storm Damage Historic Flooding in Omaha. SERVPRO of Brunswick removing mud from within drywall after historic Omaha Flood in 2019

SERVPRO of Brunswick is a part of the Disaster Recovery Team that was dispatched out to Omaha, Nebraska after the snowmelt and flooding occurred in early March of 2019. This historic flood has broken the record of the last major flooding along the Missouri River back in 2011.

Our teams made the long trek from Brunswick, Georgia to Omaha, Nebraska to help business owners and homeowners recover and restore after flood damage. Unlike most of South Georgia, the Midwest had large basements that took majority of the impact from the flood. Basements were filled with 4-5 feet of water and thick mud throughout. Carpets were saturated and water drenched the walls to the point the baseboards were removing themselves.

SERVPRO of Brunswick began immediate water extraction and setting up drying equipment to preserve the home. Whichever materials where unable to dry were then removed from the home to ensure the property was not at risk of mold growth. When flooding like this occurs we look for any contaminated water that may be unsafe to be in your home (sump pump failure), and any trapped moisture that could cause mold growth. After a water damage or flooding event mold can spread throughout the home in 48 to 72 hours. As apart of the Disaster Response Team’ SERVPRO of Brunswick was able to respond quickly to each request for service!

If you experience flood damage in your coastal Georgia home contact SERVPRO of Brunswick!

How to Keep Your Storage Unit Clean and Odor Free

3/12/2019 (Permalink)

Commercial How to Keep Your Storage Unit Clean and Odor Free Take care of your belongings in storage units by keeping them clean and odor free.

Many of us have a storage unit of some kind. Whether that unit is at your home or whether it is a unit you rent from a storage facility, the items you keep there are obviously important to you. Keeping your storage unit clean and odor free is therefore also important so that your property can remain in good condition and odor-free while you store it for future use.

If you are keeping furniture in your unit, it’s important to keep items off of the ground and cover those items that are upholstered in cloth or leather to guard against leaks, dust, and mildew. Items made of wood should also be covered for these same reasons. Boxes should be sealed with packing tape, as well, and covering them with a tarp might not be a bad idea. Keeping your property dry in the event of a leak or flood will help to prevent moisture and mold growth.

Going in periodically and rotating your items to see how everything is faring is helpful. You can take time to sweep out any accumulations of dirty and cobwebs, and dust items as well. A shop-vac can make short work of this chore, and the walls of the unit itself can be cleaned to remove dust and spiders, should there be any. In a climate-controlled unit this is less likely, but for those spaces that are standard, more care must be exercised to keep your important items safe, mold free and clean.

If you see that any of your property might be suffering, you can take steps to get it covered for the future. Bubble wrap and plastic can be used to keep these items safe. Documents and pictures should be plasticized, as well.

Using Febreze or another deodorizer in your unit and on those items that absorb odors can be very helpful, so that upon removal those pieces will be usable right away, when it is time to put them into use again.

Check for water damage on a regular basis. The management at your storage facility should be aware of any leaks or problems from the outside, but they won’t know about your unit specifically unless you let them know. If there is standing water in your unit, let them know immediately and take steps to remove that water to avoid any more damages and possible mold growth. The company can make arrangements with you to move your property to another, safer, location.

A few minutes of your time and care on a regular basis can make a big difference when it’s time to bring your property out of storage and into the light of day.

Here at SERVPRO of Brunswick, we are experienced when it comes to water damage, fire damage, mold remediation, and all of your emergency service needs! 4 Tips for Keeping Bugs Out of Your Home Come Spring

3/4/2019 (Permalink)

Cleaning 4 Tips for Keeping Bugs Out of Your Home Come Spring Don't find yourself with new unwelcome roommates when spring thaws the winter ice!

Every year after winter has come and gone, bugs come out of hibernation and are looking for places to feed and mate. They look for moist, dark places to call home, and your home is often the prime real estate. Whether it’s ants, cockroaches, or other creepy crawlies, there’s plenty that we can do to help keep them out of our homes! SERVPRO of Brunswick has put together some tips for you to help keep your home pest free.

Cleanliness is The Best Deterrent

Insects like to find dark, cluttered places to call home and multiply. Do your part and make sure that you are on top of your cleaning to make sure that the insects can’t take up residence in your home. Spring cleaning is a fantastic time to remove habitable conditions from your home from the insects, so make sure to stay on top of that!

Always Check the Screen Doors

Another item that often goes overlooked is the screen door/screens for windows. It’s important to check for cracks or openings before spring comes around to ensure that no bugs can make a break for your home. If you happen to find any holes in the screen doors, do your part and plan to repair them as soon as possible! The last thing you want is an unintentional bug infestation because one tiny hole was overlooked.

Food Management

One big offense that people oftentimes find themselves doing is leaving food out in the open. If you or your family have a bad habit of leaving food out on the counter overnight, or leaving food open in the pantry, don’t! This is a prime resource for bugs to get inside of your home. The moment that one insect finds some leftovers out in the open or the pantry, it’s game over. Soon they’ll be all over it! Make sure to discard or refrigerate any food that is being left out.

Removing Unnecessary Water

Finally, one of the least known components of a bug problem is water. If there is any kind of leak anywhere, or somewhere that has a dark and damp surface, bugs are attracted to it. Do your best to ensure that any leaks are fixed immediately and that standing water is not left out in the open for too long. Cleaning these areas immediately will persuade the insects to seek refuge elsewhere. This is prime breeding grounds for these bugs, don’t let them have a chance to get comfortable and settle!

If you find a leak or water damage in your Spring cleaning. Call SERVPRO of Brunswick to make it "Like it never even happened."

Know When to Replace Cleaning Supplies in Your Home

2/19/2019 (Permalink)

Why SERVPRO Know When to Replace Cleaning Supplies in Your Home Know the shelf life of your household cleaning supplies.

We all use a wide variety of cleaning supplies every day, and they need to be replaced!

Some types of supplies, such as sink and bath cleaning products, disappear quickly, while others, like oven cleaners and furniture oils, can last a relatively long time. Some cleaning solutions and products will show dates that they are “best used by”, but many do not. Developing a simple record keeping system for yourself, which notes when you purchased the item, can help you to decide when it might be time to buy new cleaning supplies. Replacing them in a timely manner will help to keep your home and/or business cleaner and smelling fresh!

The following products often don’t have a noted shelf life, and keeping these for too long can affect their efficiency:

  • Sponges: This item is one of the most important supplies used in cleaning. They are employed for washing and scrubbing, both in kitchen and bath, as well as many other areas of the home or business. They are at the height of their efficiency until 15 to 20 days after purchase with regular daily use, and they should be replaced. After this time, they begin to deteriorate and fall apart. Keeping the sponge very clean can help it last longer; washing it with hot water and squeezing dry after use, and using anti-germ solutions can keep it contaminant free.
  • Mops: These tools are extremely absorbent, and also need to be kept very clean between uses to prevent the growth of bacteria. Always allow it to dry completely before using again. Many mops have removable heads that can be machine-washed; this practice will help to prolong the life of the mop. Store your mop in a cool, dry space between uses.
  • Dish Rags:  These are usually made of cotton, microfiber, or other cloths, and are used primarily for dishes. A best practice for this cleaning tool is to use it only for dishes and not for other areas of your home. Paper towels are a great aid in soaking up spills, etc. and not your dishrag! These can, of course, be machine washed, but if they get to the point where they smell even when clean, it’s time to replace!
  • Dusters:  Clean your duster after every use and store in a dry area. When it begins to fall apart or deteriorate, it’s time to replace it.

When it comes to any type of solution, once the solution does not flow well from the container, or if it smells different than it did upon purchase, it is probably time to discard the item.

By keeping records of all these items, reminding you of their age, etc. will be a great help in keeping your cleaning supplies up to par!

The SERVPRO of Brunswick is always here to help you with your large cleanups. We’re experts in cleaning up fire and water damage, and also in mold remediation. Visit us on our website: SERVPRO of Brunswick or give us a call at: (912) 264-6094

The DOs and DON'Ts of before restoration professionals arrive.

2/15/2019 (Permalink)

Fire Damage The DOs and DON'Ts of before restoration professionals arrive. What to do after the fire is extinguished?

After the flames are ceased and the first responders have cleared the scene; SERVPRO of Brunswick is on their way. We often get the question from the homeowner and/or property managers after a fire “How can I help, or what can I do until SERVPRO arrives?”

We have compiled a helpful “Do’s + Don’t List” for this question.

DO:

  • Limit home traffic to prevent soot particles from being embedded in carpet and spread throughout home.
  • Keep your hands clean. By having soot on your hands can further soil walls, upholstery and woodwork.
  • When electricity is off- empty out freezer and refrigerator completely. Leave doors to appliance open to prevent future odor.
  • Change HVAC filter; but leave system off until a trained professional can check system.
  • Tape double layers of cheesecloth over air registers to prevent particles of soot from getting in or out out of the HVAC system.

Don’t:

  • Don't attempt to wash any walls or painted surfaces without first contacting your SERVPRO of Brunswick.
  • Don't send garments to the dry cleaner. Improper cleaning may set smoke odor into fabric.
  • Don’t turn on ceiling fixtures if ceiling is wet. Wiring may be wet or damaged. This can cause electrical shock and air  movement might cause secondary damage.
  • Don’t consume any food or beverage that may have been stored close to fire, heat or water. As for the food may have been contaminated

These emergency tips will assist you in taking proper action until SERVPRO of Brunswick arrives. By following these DOs and DON’Ts you minimize further damages and increase the success of restoration.

Love is Not the Only Thing in the Air!

2/7/2019 (Permalink)

Why SERVPRO Love is Not the Only Thing in the Air! A clean environment is a healthy environment. Improve your living space for the ones you love this Valentine's Day.

Love is in the air this valentine season.. But so is that pesky, sneeze making yellow pollen! ACHHOOO.

For all of your allergy sufferers, make sure you are giving them the cleanest air possible by changing your air filters every 1-3 months. Air filters serve as a blocker to trap any debris trying to enter your duct work, but also filter the air that is being blown into the home.

By not changing your air filters regularly you are decreasing the indoor air quality in your home. The non-filtered air means dust, mold, and other particles are continuously being blown into your air.

Another downside to not changing your air filters regularly is, clogged filters. Clogged filters cause your HVAC system work over time and expel more energy than necessary. Thus costing you more money for lower quality air. Clogged filters can potentially reduce the homes entire comfort level due to the lack of airflow.

Along with keeping your air filters fresh be sure to protect your air ducts, carpets, and upholstery especially if you have allergy suffers in your home.

  1. By having your ducts cleaned yearly you are preventing clogs and freeing up excess debris from entering the home.
  2. Carpets and upholstery can often trap pollutants in the fibers of the fabric. To prevent allergy irritation schedule cleanings dependent on the traffic volume of the home.

Schedule a duct and carpet cleaning for your Valentine

Caring for a Freshly Cut Christmas Tree

12/3/2018 (Permalink)

The smell of pine feeling the aroma in your home, truly makes it feel like the Holidays have arrived. Maybe it is your first year with a real tree, or possibly you just want to learn more about caring for the tree. We have you covered by a compiled list of tree care!

Keeping the Christmas tree fresh and alive:

1. A freshly cut tree trunk needs to have the spores exposed on the bottom allowing the tree to soak up nutrients. If you buy a tree from a lot before you leave ask them to saw of a inch of the trunk to make it freshly opened spores.

2. According to the Old Farmers Almanac a freshly cut Christmas tree consumes a gallon of water every 24-hours. A helpful tip for keeping your tree watered is to fill the base with a well watered soil.

3. A key for keeping your Christmas tree alive is to avoid placing it on top of heating and cooling vents.

Along with the fun that a freshly-cut Christmas tree can bring into a home, there is also many dangerous to keep in mind.

Dangerous to avoid with a freshly- cut Christmas tree:

1. Water, water, and more water. The best fire safety tip for freshly- cut trees are water. Without water your tree is producing oxogen and drying out.

2. Avoid placing the tree next to fireplaces, candles, and lights.

3. When your tree starts to shed needles and dry out, its time to toss it out. The longer the tree sits inside the home with falling needles, the risk of a home fire increases.

4. Make sure your Christmas lights have been lab tested and there are no broken lights.

5. Always turn off Christmas lights before going to bed or leaving your home.

Space Heater Safety Tips

11/30/2018 (Permalink)

Fire Damage Space Heater Safety Tips Safety tips for when you plug in the space heater.

In the colder months of the year, homeowners look for ways to make chilly areas warm and comfortable. While space heaters can be useful to keep small areas warm, it’s very important to use them with caution. In a 2010 study, it was found that space heaters caused 32 percent of all home heating fires but were involved in 79 percent of all home-heating related fire deaths. Fortunately, using a space heater can be safe if you follow these simple recommendations.

First, make sure that you create a three-foot safety zone around the space heater. Do not place the heater on or near any carpets, throw rugs, papers, or clothing. The space heater must be placed on a flat surface and not elevated on any cabinets, shelves, or other furniture.

Place the space heater in an area where it will not be in the way and where no one will trip on it. It’s a great idea to shop for a space heater with an automatic shut-off so that the heater will shut off if it tips over. Make sure that kids and pets are kept away from the heater for their own safety; space heaters can be quite warm to the touch. Also, pets may chew on the cords, so keep an eye on them around the space heater.

It’s a good idea to inspect the heater before every use. Don’t use the heater if there is any damage.

Never leave a space heater unattended. It’s tempting to leave it on while you’re sleeping to keep your bedroom warm. It is too risky to let these appliances run overnight when no one is nearby to make sure there are no problems.

You should never use a power strip or extension cord with a space heater. This cords could overheat due to the higher electrical demands and cause fire damage. Finally, ensure that your home smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors are in working order and test them monthly.

If you do have fire damage to your home and need professional cleaning services, contact us at SERVPRO of Brunswick. We will work with you to make sure your home or business returns to normal as quickly as possible.

Prepare for the Holidays by naturally deodorizing your kitchen

11/28/2018 (Permalink)

Why SERVPRO Prepare for the Holidays by naturally deodorizing your kitchen Remove unwanted odors from your home!

Everyone loves a clean kitchen, but there are certain areas in the kitchen that can trap odors. Even though you might clean your kitchen thoroughly, you might have a problem with lingering odors that regular cleaning can't get rid of. Here are four common problem areas in the kitchen and how you can deodorize them with safe, non-toxic solutions.

GARBAGE CAN
One of the first candidates for odor removal for any kitchen is the garbage can. One way to keep smells out is to throw smelly items straight into a garbage can outside of the kitchen, such as a can in the garage. If that's not possible, try putting vanilla or baking soda into the bottom of a kitchen trash bag. If the smell persists, you can wipe down the inside of the trash can with a 4:1 mixture of water and lemon juice.

KITCHEN SINK
If you've cleaned the kitchen sink and it still has lingering odors, it might be caused by rotting gunk in the garbage disposal. A good method of odor removal in the disposal is to cut up any citrus fruit such as lemon or lime, toss the pieces into the disposal, and grind them up. The acid in the citrus will disinfect the disposal with no harmful side effects.

MICROWAVE
The microwave can trap odors from meals you’ve recently cooked, leading to some strong smells. Citrus can be used here as well! You can use a leftover juiced or zested citrus fruit. Put them in a glass bowl, fill half the bowl with hot water, add some lemon juice, and microwave it for three or four minutes. The steam can also help loosen any food caked on the inside of the microwave so that you will be able to wipe it off.

REFRIGERATOR
The final place which can collect odors in the kitchen is the refrigerator. Here, when food goes bad, it can leave behind the smell long after the source is thrown away. You can reduce odors by wiping the fridge walls with a mixture of vinegar and water. Another solution between cleanings is to keep an open box of baking soda inside the refrigerator.

If you have a serious problem removing odors from your kitchen that you can't fix on your own, SERVPRO of Brunswick is an expert at restoration and cleaning. Give us a call!

Hurricane Michael

Storm Damage Hurricane Michael Crews lined up to begin restoration process after Hurricane Michael

Hurricane Michael was one of the strongest storms to hit the Florida Panhandle to ever be recorded. With sustained winds reaching up to 155mph while making landfall leading it to be the first ever Category 4 Hurricane to reach the Panhandle; while breaking national records for the fourth strongest storm to reach the United States.
Sadly, Hurricane Michael was a deadly storm and claimed 6 lives throughout Florida and Georgia.

As the SERVPRO of Brunswick wrapped up efforts in North Carolina after Hurricane Florence we were soon dispatched to help bring generators and other equipment to West Georgia after they were hit by Hurricane Michael.

After emergency crews cleared roadways and cleared it safe for disaster recovery crews to enter Florida the SERVPRO of Brunswick headed for Mexico Beach, Florida. We were truly heartbroken after seeing the destruction that Hurricane Michael brought onto these cities. People without homes, food, and power. We witnessed the grace of our Nation and the unity we all share when we face disaster. Tents were set up to pass out food, shelters were set up to cover those who lost their homes, people came all across the United States to lend a helping hand. The SERVPRO of Brunswick quickly sprung into action by setting up drying equipment, tarping roofs, and boarding up windows to prevent further damage.

Thank you to all of the amazing first responders like the American Red Cross, Salvation Army, National Guard, Firefighters, Police Officers, Patrolmen, Linmen, Dispatchers, EMT’s and Paramedics, Doctors, Nurses, SERVPRO Disaster Recovery Teams, and for all of the countless volunteers that gave their time to HELP.

We remain #FloridaStrong in the days ahead of the restoration and recovery process.

The kitchen is the heart and soul of the home, especially during Thanksgiving. With all of the chefs in the kitchen it’s important to keep kitchen safety top of mind. Thanksgiving is the leading day of the year for home fires involving cooking equipment. In 2016, U.S. fire departments responded to an estimated 1,570 home cooking fires on Thanksgiving. Because of this we compiled a list of safety tips to

Safety tips

  • Stay in the kitchen when you are cooking on the stove-top so you can keep an eye on the food.
  • Stay in the home when cooking your turkey and check on it frequently.
  • Keep the floor clear so you don’t trip over kids, toys, pocketbooks or bags.
  • Be sure electric cords from an electric knife, coffee maker, plate warmer or mixer are not dangling off the counter within easy reach of a child.
  • Never leave children alone in room with a lit candle.
  • Make sure your smoke alarms are working. Test them by pushing the test button.

SERVPRO of Brunswick is always to HERE TO HELP! When a customer called worried about the air quality in her newly purchased home we were there in what seemed to be a instant for our SERVPRO of Brunswick customer. She said we arrived in our famous green vans and dressed in our SERVPRO uniforms like the “swat team”. She feared that her indoor air quality was polluted causing her to stay up late with a nasty cough- SERVPRO of Brunswick vowed to asses the damage and compile the best plan of action.

With a look within her HVAC unit our teams noticed a build up of debris in the air ducts and tobacco smoke discoloration on the vent covers. SERVPRO of Brunswick decided a air duct cleaning would be the first plan of action to get her feeling safe and comfortable in her home. The home was roughly around 1,200 sqft and took a little less than two hours to complete the work. When our technicians were leaving they decided to leave behind a ozone machine to zap any extra odors or irritants.

After the ozone ran for 12 hours and the job was completed we did a full walk through to guarantee that the customer was satisfied with the work that was performed.

This is what our customer had to say - “Their service was top notch professional and efficient..recommend without any reserves!!”

Kitchen Fires- The Dangers of Grease

10/5/2018 (Permalink)

Fire Damage Kitchen Fires- The Dangers of Grease A grease fire is incredibly dangerous!

To most people, a home is a place of safety, comfort, and refuge. That being said, houses can be swiftly transformed from places of safety into places of great danger by uncontrolled fires.

Uncontrolled fires can start in many ways and have many causes, but one of the most dangerous varieties of fires are grease fires. Grease fires can start and spread very quickly, and are difficult to put out without the proper fire-fighting equipment. Because of the great damage grease fires can cause, you must stay well-informed about the danger. This goes for the homeowner, apartment dweller, or the owner of a restaurant. It also pays to be aware of effective ways to prevent or stop these fires if the worst happens.

What Characterizes Grease Fires?

As their names suggest, grease fires are usually caused by built-up grease and oil around stoves, ovens, and other types of cooking apparatus. Grease fires are so common that the National Fire Protection Association states that cooking fires are one of the top causes of residential and commercial fires as well as fire-related injuries. In the cooking fire category, grease-related frying fires take the top spot. Thus, it is easy to see that fire damage prevention efforts can be made more effective by raising consumer awareness and educating people about fire safety.

What Makes Grease Fires so Dangerous?

Grease fires are dangerous for many reasons, but two of the biggest ones include the difficulty in putting them out and the high temperatures associated with them. These kinds of fires spread quite easily, and are well-known to quickly cause significant damage to structures.

What are Some Effective Ways to Mitigate Grease Fire Damages?

Fire can cause especially severe damages to structures due to the fire itself and the water and chemicals that are necessary to fight the fire. Fire damages can be very difficult to repair without the proper equipment, skills, and experience.

The good news is, your local disaster mitigation experts at SERVPRO of Brunswick stand ready to put their specialized skills to work to on your behalf. We offer 24-hour emergency disaster relief services, trained and experienced technicians, and state of the art restoration technology. Contact us today and get your home or business back up and running in no time.

Property Owners.. Why it’s important to keep your AC unit running after tenants move out

9/18/2018 (Permalink)

Mold Remediation Property Owners.. Why it’s important to keep your AC unit running after tenants move out Mold growth on a couch after AC had been turned off for the summer while home was vacant.

Should I keep my AC running in my rental while vacant?

When the tenants move out and you await for more to move in switch the power bill back to your name to ensure the AC unit is still circulating air throughout the home. Doing this will help eliminate moisture build up within the property. In the Golden Isles we know all too well the of moisture within our Coastal Climate.

By keeping your AC Unit running it continues to control the climate in the home and discourages moisture to build up on walls, ceilings, and furniture. Keeping the air circulating is crucial especially if the property is fully furnished. Fabric materials grow mold very easily due to the organic makeup of the fabric allowing it to be a fantastic breeding ground for all types of mold. Mold can drastically spread in 48-72 hours.

If your property sits vacant for a while remember these helpful tips:

  • Keep the air circulating
  • Cover furniture
  • Check the property regularly

If you find mold in your rental property?

  • Stay out of affected areas
Turn off the HVAC system and fans.
  • Contact SERVPRO of Brunswick for mold remediation services.

What not to do:

  • Don’t touch or disturb mold growth
  • Don’t blow air across any surface with visible or suspected mold growth.
  • Don’t attempt to dry the area yourself.
  • Don’t spray bleach or other disinfectants on the mold.

Roof leak? Here are 4 tips to remember!

9/4/2018 (Permalink)

The rain is coming down and you realize you have a roof leak. Quick grab the bucket and call SERVPRO of Brunswick.

Hopefully, you caught it as a minor drip instead of a major leak. If you sustained water damage from that leak, you need to take steps to contain the damage and start getting this right.

4 Tips for Dealing with Water Damage from a Leaking Roof

  • Contain Water
  • Locate Leak
  • Make temporary repairs
  • Call in the roofing and water restoration professionals

1. Deal with the water- Leaks usually pool on the nearest horizontal surface. For attic leaks, the water tends to pool on the ceiling below. The water will find the path of least resistance like a light fixture or vent opening. That is where you will see the drips. Get a bucket under the drip to keep the water from doing more damage. If the water is causing a dip in the ceiling, use the tip of a pencil to open a small hole in the dip to drain the water into a bucket.

2. Locate the location of the leak- Get up into the attic to find where the water is getting in. It may be right above where the water is pooling, or it may be higher in the roof line. It could be near a vent or chimney opening as those are vulnerable locations for water leaks. If possible, get a bucket under the leak point, that will prevent any further damage to the ceiling below.

3. Make temporary repairs if possible- If you can access the roof safely, draping a tarp over the leak can help prevent water from getting inside. If you cannot access the roof safely, use roof tape or cement to patch the hole. That will provide a temporary patch to keep the water out until the roofer arrives.

4. Call SERVPRO of Brunswick. You need to call in two types of professional help. First, get a roofer in to fix the leak in the roof. The roofer has the equipment to do the job safely and effectively. Second, you need to bring in water restoration specialists to deal with the damage the leak caused. They can get the water out and start drying out your personal possessions. Doing this quickly can prevent mold and mildew from developing and minimize further damage.

These steps will help you minimize the damage the leak has caused and start getting your home back to normal. If you need assistance with water damage restoration, give us a call here at SERVPRO of Brunswick.

Green Tips for Cleaning up Mold Naturally

8/14/2018 (Permalink)

Mold could be growing in your home or business and you might never know because mold loves those dark and humid places that humans don’t pay much attention to. Basements, kitchens, and bathrooms are the most likely places to find mold and bacteria growth since water is a big factor in these spaces. Once a mold colony begins, it can rapidly establish itself within 24-48 hours, causing respiratory problems and allergic reactions in many people.

Using chemicals is something many of us are avoiding these days as well, so here are some non-toxic ways to eradicate mold.

SUPPLIES

  • Hydrogen peroxide, vinegar, or baking soda
  • Scrubbing brush
  • Rubber gloves
  • Spray bottle

DIRECTIONS

Using Hydrogen Peroxide:

    • Pour 3% concentration hydrogen peroxide into a spray bottle and saturate the moldy surface completely. Let it sit for 10 minutes.
    • Scrub the area to remove all mold and mold stains, and then wipe down surfaces to remove residual mold and spores.
  • Using Vinegar:
    • Pour white distilled vinegar into a spray bottle - do not water down. Spray the solution onto moldy surfaces and let it sit for one hour. Wipe the area clean with water and allow to dry thoroughly; any odors from the vinegar should be gone within a few hours.
    • Baking soda can also be used along with the vinegar to kill different mold species.
  • Using Baking Soda
    • Add ¼ tablespoon baking soda to a spray bottle of water and shake till dissolved. Spray the moldy area with the solution and use the scrubbing brush to remove all mold from surfaces. Rinse the area with water to remove any residual mold.
    • Spray the surface a second time and let dry thoroughly; this will kill any left-over mold and prevent it from returning.

All these solutions are wonderful non-toxic alternatives to chemical-based cleaners and are safe to use for people, pets, and the environment. They are also easy to find and inexpensive as well.

SERVPRO of Brunswick cares about you, your family, and the environment. Call us today at (912) 264-6094 for all your cleanup needs.

Top Commercial Cleaning Jobs You Should Plan For

8/7/2018 (Permalink)

As a business owner or the owner of commercial property, you probably have a list of things in mind that you will want to be cleaned and maintained, and you will have established a working relationship with a professional commercial cleaning company.

When it’s time for cleaning projects to be completed, make sure you have received a checklist from the cleaning company that helps you get ready for the job. Every area of your property is different with unique requirements, and your cleaning company will want you to be ready for them.

When it comes to your business, there are a few jobs that you should probably plan for on a regular basis:

LOBBY OR RECEPTION AREA: Since this is the first area anyone sees when they come to your place of business, it should be kept in pristine shape at all times, undergoing daily cleaning and spot checks throughout the day. In addition to keeping it clean and tidy at all times, a routine deep cleaning should be done regularly, keeping weather conditions in mind. Recessed lighting, high shelves, and carpeting are all items that will need special attention on a regular basis here.

WORKSPACES - OFFICES AND CUBICLES: These areas can get dusty easily since electronics attract dust, so desks can be cleared of all machinery and work-related items and cleaned thoroughly. They also need to be disinfected regularly to discourage office-wide illnesses. The flooring in these areas needs a routinely-scheduled cleaning, as well, to keep the whole space looking great. HVAC vents will require attention here, as well as windows, both inside and out.

BATHROOMS AND KITCHEN: These areas, like the ones at home, see a lot of traffic, and can get pretty unattractive quickly. Daily maintenance can do a lot to keep things clean, but scheduling routine heavy-duty cleaning will ensure that healthy conditions are maintained. Surfaces used for food preparation, counters in the bathroom, toilets, and flooring are all things people come in contact with every day and should be cleaned thoroughly on a regular basis.

Here at SERVPRO of Brunswick, we’re experienced in commercial cleaning projects, and happy to help. We also handle cleanup jobs after fire and water damage, and mold remediation is one of our specialties. Call us today at (912) 264-6094.

Coming up with a Fire Emergency Plan

8/7/2018 (Permalink)

Fires in homes and businesses result in injuries, property damage, and even death. A plan to handle a fire emergency will help to lower the chances that these things will happen to your staff and loved ones.

We’re sharing tips today that are all part of a good fire emergency plan:

SMOKE ALARMS: Install good quality smoke alarms on or near the ceilings of your home or business in areas where people gather. In a home, the best place is near bedrooms. Installing carbon monoxide alarms in the same areas is always a good idea since CO is an odorless and colorless gas produced by burning fuels and nearly undetectable unless an alert is given.

FIRE EXTINGUISHERS: Ensure that you have at least one multipurpose fire extinguisher readily accessible. Show everyone where it is and how to use it.

FIREPLACE INSPECTIONS: Have your wood burning fireplace inspected annually in the fall before you use it during cold weather. Your HVAC unit should be looked over at this point as well. Employ a professional for these tasks.

CREATE AN ESCAPE PLAN: Have an escape plan for your family, and make sure everyone understands it and can follow the plan in case of fire. Second story homes should have an escape ladder.

REMOTE MONITORS: There are remote monitors available today to let you know if there is a fire in your home while you are away. They can be plugged into an electrical outlet easily and connected to your internet, and you will be notified by the app you download on your phone.

FIRE-RESISTANT MATERIALS: During home repair or remodeling, use fire-resistant building materials when available. For example, using a fire retardant brand of insulation can be a huge part of keeping your home or business fire safe.

Call the SERVPRO of Brunswick team anytime for help with fire safety. We are always available to assist with home or commercial cleanup after fire and water damage, as well. Our phone number is (912) 264-6094.

SERVPRO of Brunswick Named a Best Of Homeguide Pro

8/2/2018 (Permalink)

The SERVPRO of Brunswick team is proud to announce that we have been named 2018 Best of HomeGuide Pro! We are very honored by this selection, since less than 6% of all HomeGuide professionals out of dozens in the area make up this list after having been scored on more than 10 variables.

Our team always works hard, performing excellent work in a timely, professional manner, and we are proud of the recognition we have received from HomeGuide as carpet cleaning professionals. However, being able to serve our customers in the Brunswick area is something we are even more honored to be able to do. Thank you, Brunswick, for contacting us with your cleanup and remediation needs!

Here at SERVPRO of Brunswick, we offer a range of specialized cleaning methods that ensure you receive the best service possible. These services include:

  • Dry Cleaning: when color and speed are an issue
  • Hot Water Extraction: a deep cleaning method for all carpet types
  • Deluxe Precondition and Rinse: Helps restore deeply soiled areas
  • Showcase Premier Cleaning: The most thorough cleaning method available
  • Bonnet Cleaning: A less aggressive method used for short-pile carpets

Your carpets act as filters that trap dirt, dust, gases, animal hair, and other contaminants. There are proactive steps that you can take between professional carpet cleanings to increase the lifespan of your carpets, such as vacuuming regularly, removing spots, and moving furniture regularly to change the traffic patterns in your home or business. Walk-off mats will limit the amount of dirt brought in by foot traffic while pilating your carpeting will prevent matting.

A cleaning done by SERVPRO of Brunswick will address both moderate and heavy soil conditions in your carpeting, and a good rule of thumb is to schedule professional cleanings every 12 months to keep your home or business flooring looking its very best. Dirt builds up in layers, so when soiling becomes visibly noticeable, keep in mind that there is even more hiding below the surface and causing damage. Not allowing your carpeting to become saturated with dirt will help it to last much longer, while the required cleaning will not be as costly, saving you money over time.

Here at SERVPRO of Brunswick, we employ state of the art equipment to help you keep your carpeting looking its best. We are fire and water damage cleanup experts, too, and we also handle mold remediation. Keep us in mind for all of your professional cleaning projects both large and small. Call us today at (912) 319 0106!

Where to Check for Water Damage

7/31/2018 (Permalink)

Damp areas are an attractive spot for a mold colony to begin, and that’s something no one wants, or needs, to see. Doing regular inspections of areas in your home or business that are most likely to develop water damages due to leaks and such will allow you to take care of issues before they can become serious.

Here are the top three areas to check regularly for water damage:

The bathroom. Water is the name of the game when it comes to the bath area. Most bathrooms are cleaned thoroughly at least once a week, and these times are great for checking for leaks and damp areas. Look in the least traveled spots, such as corners of the linen closet, behind the toilet, under the sink. If there are any leaks in these places, they can be a danger until they are fully dry. You can invest in a dehumidifier for your bathroom, which is a great help.

The kitchen. This area of the home or business is also a watery place, and it is used more than any other area in homes besides the bath. Keep an eye out for spills and leaks and clean them up immediately to ensure that they are not attracting mold spores, which are always in our air and cannot be removed. Under the sink and refrigerator are places that can be damaged by water without you noticing, so get out your flashlight and make sure you see every corner clearly.

The laundry room. This room, since it has large appliances, also has nooks and crannies that are not cleaned as often, and a leak behind the washing machine can create huge issues down the road. Add to that the humidity in the air and possible unseen leaks or drips, and you have a recipe for the establishment of a mold colony. Enlist help, pull the washer and dryer out from the wall regularly, and make sure the areas behind them are clean, dry, and disinfected.

Other areas to keep an eye on: hall closets, your garage, and/or basement.

SERVPRO of Brunswick is always here to help you with any issues related to water damage in your home or business. Large-scale cleanups after flooding and fire are our specialties, and we are mold remediation experts, too. Call us at (912) 264-6094.

First Steps in Dealing with Fire Damage

7/24/2018 (Permalink)

A house fire is a very traumatic experience, and as well as being dangerous and putting lives at risk, your home and many items of personal value to you may have been lost or badly damaged by the flames, the heat, smoke or water, which is emotionally troubling. Firefighters may have found it necessary to cut holes in walls to look for hidden flames, or in the roof to let out heat and smoke, so your home will probably be almost unrecognizable to you. The clean up after a fire in your home will take time and patience. Here are some tips that you can take right away to help you and your loved ones get back to normal as soon as possible:

First, you will need to contact your insurance agent before any fire damage is repaired or clean-up is begun. You will need to be prepared with information on what will be covered, and how to find reputable companies that can take care of your property for you during this time.

Secondly, you will want to take steps to find and retrieve all important documents, and replace those that have been lost or irretrievably damaged, such as birth and death records, social security cards, mortgage and banking information and records, wills, and stocks and bonds, as soon as it is possible to do so.

Another step to keep in mind is to try and limit all movement about the home; this will prevent soot particles from becoming embedded in your upholstery and carpeting. You can place towels or old linens on your rugs, upholstered furniture, and foot traffic areas.

Changing your HVAC filters after a fire is a good idea and another vital step to take, and if the power is out, empty your freezer and fridge and prop the doors open to get rid of the smoke.

You don’t want to wash any walls or painted surfaces, or clean carpets, etc., without contacting a fire damage specialist. Any canned or packaged food and beverage items that were stored near the heat or fire will need to be thrown out. If your ceiling is wet, don’t turn on any ceiling fixtures such as fans or lighting; the wiring could be damaged.

Here at SERVPRO of Brunswick, we are always ready to help you in the event of fire damage to your home and property. We are also experienced in the areas of water damage, as well as mold prevention and remediation. Visit our website: SERVPRO of Brunswick, or contact us by phone at: (912) 264-6094.

Mold Prevention Tips for Your Home

7/24/2018 (Permalink)

Just the thought of mold growing in your home can be very unsettling.

Mold is actually very beneficial in some areas of our lives, such as in cheese-making and in the production of medicines such as penicillin, and it is part of the natural processes of the earth during the decomposition of nature’s organic matter. Yet mold can be a very unhealthy organism to have around at times, such as when it grows undetected in your home. The spores spread easily and never completely eradicated, growing anywhere: on carpet, paper, inside walls, and on food.

Here are some mold prevention tips for your home:

  • LOOK FOR LEAKS: Leaks and flooding aftermath need to be cleaned up and dried as soon as possible to prevent water damage and mold growth. Keep an eye open for stains on ceilings and walls - telltale signs of leaks that are happening behind the scenes. Keep rain gutters clean and in good repair, and make sure water is properly diverted from the foundations and low-lying areas of your house.
  • KEEP THINGS DRY: Mold grows where it’s wet and will take over in 24-48 hours. Even leaving wet items lying around the house, such as beach towels and swimsuits, can create a problem. Hang things up to dry.
  • MAINTAIN PROPER VENTILATION: Make sure your living areas are properly ventilated. Any appliances that produce moisture need to be vented to the outdoors. Using a dehumidifier is always a good idea; today’s energy-efficient homes can actually hold moisture indoors, so monitoring the humidity levels in your home will help you keep the atmosphere healthy.
  • MOLD-RESISTANT PRODUCTS: Anytime you do repairs or renovations, use mold-resistant products such as drywall or sheetrock; many paints on the market today contain mold inhibitors, as well. These paints are especially good for use in bathrooms and laundry areas, for example, where humidity levels will probably be the highest in the home.
  • HOUSEPLANTS: Mold is apt to grow on houseplants, so keep leaves clean and dry by wiping down leaves periodically.

In the event that a mold problem has developed in your home, you can contact us here at SERVPRO of Brunswick for help. Our phone number is (912) 264-6094. We are experienced in cleanup projects needed after fire or water damage.

Top Three Storm Damage Tips

7/24/2018 (Permalink)

Summer storms can appear on the horizon quickly and can surprise you with their violence. All that water can be devastating to a home or commercial building, causing storm damage and water damage that can take a significant amount of time and expense to repair. There are several steps you can take to prepare your property for inclement weather events and possible flooding; preventive measures will reduce the amount of flood and storm damage sustained and the time it can take to get life back to normal.

  • MAINTAIN ROOFS AND GUTTERS: Well-maintained gutter systems are much better at diverting water to proper drainage areas, while a roof that is in good repair will prevent water in the interiors of your buildings. If your gutters are clogged with dead leaves and debris, rainwater can overflow and saturate the ground around the foundations causing damage there, while backed-up water can spill into wall structures. A regular cleaning schedule for your gutters is a good idea, and regular roof inspections will reveal problems quickly and allow you to repair problem areas before bad weather hits.
  • STORM DRAINS: Storm drains need to be maintained properly, as well. These are in place to move excess water away from buildings and driveways. Your local government is usually responsible for this, but keeping an eye on them around your property will allow you to be able to report a problem right away so that repairs can be made, leaving you ready for storm waters.
  • RESPONSE PLAN: Have a plan ready for work staff and loved ones. In the event of flooding, make sure you have a system in place to communicate to everyone so that they know whether to travel or not. No one should brave driving through flood waters! Listening to weather updates is a good idea, and you’ll want to make sure you keep an emergency preparedness kit on site.

Water Damage Clean Up Tips

7/16/2018 (Permalink)

Whether it comes from a storm or an old water heater, water damage can cause a lot of problems. From ruining your furniture and structures to creating a perfect spot for mold to grow, water damage is something you want to handle right away.

You can follow these tips to help you keep on top of any damage to your home from excess moisture and smaller water issues:

  • Check appliances, hoses, and piping for damage regularly.
  • If you smell the musty odor that is a telltale sign of mold beginning to grow, find the source right away and get the colony cleaned up.
  • Clean up all spills as soon as they occur.
  • If a leak is found, no matter how small, make sure the necessary repairs are done as soon as possible and dry the affected area completed.
  • If you live in an area with high humidity, using a dehumidifier can greatly reduce damage from excess moisture in the air.
  • Wipe down and dry the walls in your kitchen regularly to avoid a mold colony establishing itself.
  • Scrub and dry your sink thoroughly, especially around the faucet and knobs; corrosion can make it necessary to replace these items much sooner than you planned if they are not kept clean.

In the event that you do suffer larger-scale water damage in your home or business:

  • Remove all furniture and machinery from the area.
  • You may need to move large appliances away from the walls to remove moisture or standing water.
  • Soak up all excess water completely, and immediately. Standing water attracts pests such as mosquitoes; mold isn’t the only problem that can occur.
  • Fans and dehumidifiers will be a great help in drying the area completely.
  • Call a professional cleanup up company if the task is beyond your expertise.
  • Mold remediation is a job for a professional.

Here at SERVPRO of Brunswick, we are always ready to help with cleanup after water and fire damage, no matter if the project is large or not so large. We are also mold remediation experts. Call us at (912) 264-6094, or visit our website: SERVPRO of Brunswick

Preparing Your Attic for Summer Storms

7/3/2018 (Permalink)

Summer is here, and with it comes sunshine, vacations, and freedom from school. Storms are also a part of summer, however, and can cause a lot of damage to your home and property. Inspecting your home before and after a summer storm is always a good idea, but don’t forget your attic! Your attic is one of the places in your home that you won’t visit regularly; usually, a trip up to the attic is only made when you need something you have put up for a rainy day. It’s important to check your attic area periodically for leaks and water damage after a summer storm system passes by.

  • Check your roofing after severe summer weather. It’s crucial to check all roofing after a strong storm and/or high winds to ensure it is still intact. If there has been any damage, have it repaired immediately; some areas of the country see stormy weather pretty regularly.
  • If your attic has exterior windows, ensure that they are properly fitted and in good repair to alleviate any possible future leaks.
  • Make sure boxes, furniture, and other items that may be stored in your attic are pulled away from the walls so that you can see if and when water damage occurs. Cover these items with plastic and seal boxes well to keep your property from suffering.

Here at SERVPRO of Brunswick, we are always ready to help with cleanup after water and fire damage and are experts in the area of mold remediation. Call us at (912) 264-6094, or visit our website: SERVPRO of Brunswick

Fire Extinguisher Safety Tips

6/26/2018 (Permalink)

Fire extinguishers are an invaluable tool to use against small fires and can also be very effective to protect evacuation routes. According to OSHA,  the most common emergency any home or business owner should plan for is a fire.

Homeowners should take the steps necessary to learn how to use the fire extinguisher kept in their home. OSHA requires all employers to train their staff thoroughly on how to use a fire extinguisher correctly as well, and to accurately assess the situation if a fire is to occur. Everyone also needs to be able to properly determine when an evacuation should take place for the safety and well-being of all those in danger. OSHA has established annual training for employees as a minimal requirement for all places of business, and this training is helpful for homeowners as well.

The PASS training technique is recommended:

  • P - Pull the pin on the extinguisher.
  • A - Aim the nozzle of the hose at the base of the fire.
  • S - Squeeze the handle to release the extinguishing agent.
  • S - Sweep the nozzle from side to side, directed at the base of the flames until the fire is extinguished.

Once someone knows how to properly operate a fire extinguisher, they should then also be trained to follow fire safety protocol. They should know how to:

  • Locate and activate the fire alarm.
  • Call the fire department and emergency responders immediately.
  • Determine a safe evacuation route that will direct people away from flames, excessive heat, and smoke. They should also know how to keep the route from becoming blocked,
  • Use the PASS technique for discharging a fire extinguisher as outlined above, and know the importance of backing away from the area if the fire flares up again.
  • Evacuate the area immediately if the fire is still going and the extinguisher is empty, or if the fire grows beyond what can be safely handled without fire department personnel.

Fire extinguishers are made to handle small fires only. Excessive smoke and heat, impaired evacuation routes, and poor visibility are all conditions that can arise quickly. People need to understand that safety comes first and foremost and be prepared to evacuate if the fire grows to excessive levels.

SERVPRO of Brunswick is here to help after fire damages have been sustained in your home or business. We also handle mold remediation and water damage cleanups both large and small. Call us today at (912) 264-6094, or visit our website: SERVPRO of Brunswick

The Warning Signs of Mold Growth in the Summer

6/26/2018 (Permalink)

Everyone has seen reports warning about the dangers of toxic mold. These reports can be extremely alarming, so let’s go over the facts that will help us better understand the issue, its dangers, and how to prevent it during the long, hot, humid days of summer.

The scientific name for the mold that is often called “black,” or toxic, mold is Stachybotrys chartarum. It can produce both allergens and irritants. However, many other types of mold can produce those same allergens and irritants, so it’s best to treat any mold with caution. Do not touch or disturb any mold found, and be sure to stay out of the affected areas.

Mold can affect the body negatively if not treated, and a minor mold problem can quickly grow into an infestation. Mold spores are microscopic and are everywhere. They float in the air, so they are able to enter your home through windows and doors, or HVAC systems. When water intrudes into your property, mold growth can start in as little as 48 hours since mold thrives on moisture, quickly growing into colonies when exposed to damp conditions.

It often produces a strong musty odor, so if you smell that odor it can lead you to areas in your home that could be experiencing a problem. Keep the humidity level in your home below 45 to help in blocking the growth of toxic mold in your house, and invest in a dehumidifier if you feel it will be beneficial.

Buckling and warping of woodwork and discoloration of surfaces can also be signs of water damage, and mold will not be far behind. Keep an eye on out of the way areas and places that don’t see the light of day. These are favorite spots for mold to colonize.

Many types of mold can cause adverse reactions, so you should contact us here at SERVPRO of Brunswick any time mold found in your home. Call us immediately at (912) 264-6094 if you suspect a toxic mold issue in your home. We are mold remediation experts!

Keeping Your Break Room Clean

6/19/2018 (Permalink)

Anyone who has shared a break room at work knows that it can be a challenge to keep this community area clean. People often have very different ideas of what cleanliness looks like, and this can create a lot of tension in the workplace, leading to problems with morale and relationships. These types of conflicts will eventually affect your business, and that’s not something any business owner wants to experience.

Either you or a designated representative can establish break room expectations. Here are some tips that can help:

  • Post a cleaning schedule on the break room wall in clear view of everyone who will be using it so that expectations are clear.
  • Ask for volunteers who would like to oversee a particular area, and schedule their duties on a rotating basis.
    • Daily - clean food prep areas, sweep or vacuum flooring, trash removal, wipe down door knobs, wipe down chairs and tables
    • Weekly - clean microwave and other cooking appliances, front of the refrigerator, glass, dishwasher, mop flooring, launder linens used during the week
    • Weekly or bi-monthly - remove old food and containers from the refrigerator and make it known that anything left behind will be discarded.
    • Monthly - inspect the entire area for problems, such as food underneath or behind the stove, which will attract vermin. Check under the sink area for out-of-date cleaning products or leaks; left to itself, moisture can be attractive to mold spores.
  • Consider allowing the volunteers to leave work early on Fridays or come in late as a compensation for their willingness to handle this part of the workplace.
  • Install air fresheners or products in your break areas to reduce odors.
  • Ensure that cleaning supplies are readily available at all times and that sponges and/or cleaning rags are clean and fresh. If they are not, people will avoid using them.
  • Make it clear that if cleanliness standards are not followed, use of the break room will be restricted or abolished.

Contact us here at SERVPRO of Brunswick for all your cleaning projects, both large and small. We are experts at cleanup after water and fire damage, and are equipped to handle mold remediation. You can contact us through our website: SERVPRO of Brunswick or call us anytime at (912) 264-6094

First Steps in Dealing with Water Damage

6/12/2018 (Permalink)

Water damage is something that can catch us off guard, and it’s certainly an unwelcome issue. Oftentimes it is due to human error, such as someone forgetting to turn off a faucet or neglecting to replace a hose with a slight leak. Other times, it is due to severe weather or other circumstances out of our control, such as a broken underground city water pipe; these types of water damage can cause a lot of trouble, as well as being very costly.

When dealing with any type of water damage situation, whether large or small, there are a few steps you can follow that will help you handle the issue:

  • Do as thorough an assessment as possible of all property that has sustained damages from the event. Look behind appliances, lift up carpeting, check the crawl spaces, and make sure you are using a light source that allows you to see exactly what is going on.
  • Take pictures of all your findings, no matter how small. Once things dry out, you will have no evidence of what has happened, and that might create a challenge when attempting to recoup losses.
  • Contact government officials if the damage comes from a city or county source, and give them as much information as you can. Stay onsite to walk them through your property if at all possible, and share pictures with them if they ask.
  • Get in touch with your homeowner’s insurance company and send them all the documentation and images that you have collected. Be clear and precise, describing every instance of damage thoroughly and completely so that all records will be accurate.
  • Once all the information has been shared with the above entities, make arrangements to allow your property to dry out completely. Keep an eye open for mold colonies taking hold.
  • Using fans and dehumidifiers in enclosed spaces are an efficient way to alleviate damp and moist circumstances quickly and thoroughly before mold can set in.
  • If you find items that are damaged beyond repair or will not dry out properly, get rid of them immediately to avoid mold from taking hold.

Keeping Your Home Safe from Storm Damage

6/12/2018 (Permalink)

Storms can become a problem with little to no warning. Watching the news can keep us informed beforehand, but bad weather is still unpredictable, so we need to take steps to keep our homes safe from the damages that storms can cause.

Conducting an inspection of your home’s premises is vital to complete before inclement weather hits. A leaky roof or windows can be big problems during extreme conditions such as heavy rains and high winds. Do all your exterior doors and windows fit correctly, and is the weather stripping in these areas in good condition? When is the last time you took a look at your roof to see if it is storm ready?

Loose shutters and rain gutters can present a real problem in high winds, as can unstable large trees. It’s a good idea to trim back trees and bushes with large heavy branches that are not in good condition so that windows and vehicles are not in danger of storm damage in high winds.

Many homes in older cities have drainage ditches at the front of the property. Take time to inspect this area and remove debris or dirt that might obstruct the flow of water from a heavy rain. A clogged drainage ditch can cause a lot of damage by backing up and flooding your property both during or after a storm.

In the event of impending bad weather, do you have a system in place that will help you to get information to everyone? Most of us use our cell phones to communicate these days, but your cell phone service could be at risk when rough conditions hit. You might consider installing a good old-fashioned landline, just in case. If you or a family member gets stuck or injured at work or out doing errands, they may need help, so it’s vital that lines of communication stay open.

The SERVPRO of Brunswick team is experienced and equipped to assist you in the event of storm damage, fire damage, or mold issues. You can give us a call today at (912) 264-6094, or visit us on our website:  SERVPRO of Brunswick

Dehumidifying Your Home

6/5/2018 (Permalink)

Allergies are a big problem for many people and can make anyone really miserable. The culprits in a humid climate are usually mold, mildew, dust mites, and seasonal allergy issues such as pollen and dust, etc. Allergic reactions can show up as skin rashes, sneezing, difficulty breathing, itchy eyes and a stuffy nose. When allergies are left untreated, they can lead to asthma and other complications. If you or someone you love suffers from allergies, using a dehumidifier in your home can be a huge help.

Whether you live in an area with a humid climate, or just in a space that tends to be damp, you may be experiencing problems from mold and/or mildew or dust mites. Limited ventilation in places such as basement apartments, small kitchens, or bathrooms can cause moisture to build up, even in the dryest of climates, so ensuring that these areas are properly ventilated is vital. You can also opt to use a dehumidifier in your home, and this is a very efficient way to protect your home and loved ones from physical issues that may arise in a damp environment.

Dehumidifiers can help by:

  • Reducing humidity levels, making your home less inviting to allergens.
  • Reducing the possibility that mold will develop on furniture, clothing, and other materials.
  • Eliminating the unpleasant odors that accompany mold and mildew.
  • Allowing you to breathe easier and reducing irritation to your skin and respiratory system.
  • Lowering the amount of dust in the home, which can be an irritant.
  • Keeping electronics and tools drier and free from rust and corrosion, and even prolonging the shelf life of breads and cereals!
  • Helping your clothing dry faster.
  • Lowering energy costs by assisting your HVAC in running more efficiently. When air in the home is humid, the A/C must work doubly hard by both removing the moisture and cooling the air. Your unit will wear out sooner under that stress, and that’s costly.
  • Running quietly and efficiently in the background of daily life. You won’t even notice it!

Practicing Fire Safety In Your Business

5/29/2018 (Permalink)

Our team here at SERVPRO of Brunswick would like to share some tips with you today to help keep yourself, your staff, and your business property safe from fire:

  • Install high-quality smoke detectors on or near the ceilings of your business in all areas, including warehouses and outlying buildings. Installing Carbon Monoxide alarms in the same areas is always a good idea since CO is an odorless and colorless gas produced by burning fuels.
  • Ensure that you have multipurpose fire extinguishers readily accessible in several areas of your property, and make sure your staff knows where they are and how to use them properly.
  • Have your HVAC unit inspected on a regular basis. Employ a professional for these types of specialized tasks.
  • Create an escape plan for your team and make sure everyone understands it and can follow the plan in case of fire. Post your evacuation plan in public areas so that both your staff and customers are aware of where to go in the event of a fire. Second story buildings should have an escape ladder; post warnings near any elevators that they are not to be used in case of a fire.
  • There are remote monitors available today that let you know if there is a fire in your buildings while you are not there. They can be plugged into an electrical outlet easily and connected to your internet, and you will be notified by the app you download on your phone.
  • During repair or remodelling of your business property, use fire-resistant building materials when available. For example, using a fire retardant brand of insulation can be a huge part of keeping your workspaces fire safe.

Call the team here at SERVPRO of Brunswick for assistance with fire safety, and remember: we are always available for large-scale cleanups after fire and water damage in both residential and commercial properties. Smoke Detector Maintenance

5/29/2018 (Permalink)

We never think of smoke detectors, until disaster strikes. Make it a priority to maintain your smoke detectors on a regular basis so that while you are going about your daily routine, they are ready to alert you and your loved ones of danger.

  • Every bedroom and sleeping area on every level of your home needs a smoke detector, even the attic and basement.
  • Make sure that every unit is securely fastened to its surface, whether it is a wall or a ceiling.
  • When it comes to the workplace, ensure that they are installed in all areas where people spend time, from the bathroom to the warehouse. Customer waiting areas and public restrooms need to be outfitted, as well. Stored product also needs to be protected.
  • Make sure you know how old your alarms are, and test them monthly. Use the test button for this, and make sure everyone in your home or business knows what they sound like so that reaction times will be quick in the event of a fire.
  • Keep them clean and free of greasy build-up and dust, which could affect their performance. You can use a hand-held vacuum for this task. Place this activity on your workplace cleaning schedule to ensure that it is completed on a regular basis.
  • Are they hard-wired or wireless? When is the last time you replaced the batteries? Ensure that your smoke detectors are powered up and ready to go at all times.
  • Are your alarms interconnected? They should all go off at the same time in the event of a fire, so contact a professional to have this taken care of.
  • Replace all smoke detectors, including those that use 10-year batteries and hard-wired alarms before they turn 10 years old, or sooner if they don’t respond correctly when tested.
  • Save and follow manufacturer’s instructions for testing and maintenance of your units.
  • Your units should be marked by a certified inspection entity.

A Storm Preparation Checklist for Your Business

5/15/2018 (Permalink)

Storms can happen without much warning during the season and bring with them a lot of water. All that water can be devastating to a commercial building, causing damage that can take a significant amount of time and expense to repair. There are several steps you can take to prepare your Brunswick business for storms and possible flooding; preventive measures will reduce the amount of flood damage your business sustains and the time it can take to bring your operations back to normal. Here is a checklist to help you:

  • GUTTERS: Gutter systems are in place to divert water to proper drainage areas, and they can only do a sufficient job when they are well-maintained. If your gutters are clogged with dead leaves and debris, rainwater can overflow and saturate the ground around the foundations causing damage there, while backed-up water can spill over into wall structures. That can be instrumental in allowing mold to take hold; mold can begin to grow in damp conditions in 24-48 hours! As you can see, a regular cleaning schedule for your gutters is a good idea, which is why it’s at the top of our checklist.
  • STORM DRAINS: Storm drains need to be maintained properly, as well. These are in place to move excess water away from buildings and parking areas. Your local government is usually responsible here but keeping an eye on drains around your property will help you to be able to report a problem right away.
  • EMERGENCY RESPONSE PLAN: Have a plan ready for your employees in the event of dangerous storms and flooding. Make sure you have a system in place to communicate with everyone so that they know whether to come into work or not. Listening to weather updates is essential in these circumstances, and you’ll want to make sure you keep an emergency preparedness kit on site.

SERVPRO of Brunswick is always ready to help if your business experiences storm damage. Call us with any concerns at (912) 264 6094, or visit our website: SERVPRO of Brunswick Responding to storm damage immediately can help get you back in business as soon as possible.

Being Prepared for Water Damage During Summer

5/15/2018 (Permalink)

Summertime can be wet. In some areas of the country, rain is almost a daily occurrence during the good ol’ summertime! Flooding can be a hazard when this happens, and that can be inconvenient and even dangerous. Possessions can be ruined, and even the structures of homes and businesses can be negatively affected. A professional water restoration company can be a big help during such times, as they are able to complete all necessary repairs in a timely and efficient manner.

While flooding can’t be predicted most of the time, educating yourself on the most common flood-prone areas will help you be prepared to handle such an event, and even to prevent it! Some areas of your home or business are going to be more apt to experience water damage than others during storms, such as low-lying areas like basements and cellars.

Here is a list of the three most common areas to suffer from summer water damage:

BASEMENTS

Basements and cellars, the lowest parts of a house or building, need to be watched during wet weather since they have a number of easy entry points for water. If there is heavy rainfall during inclement weather, or if the building is near a body of water such as a lake or river, they are going to be in danger. Keep an eye open for cracks in the foundation, ceiling, and walls of these areas!

ATTICS, ROOFS AND GUTTERS

A damaged roof, either from weather or fire, is susceptible to water damage and the areas underneath will suffer. A small leak can turn into a big problem before you know it. If the rain gutters have not been properly maintained, you may experience some problems stemming from standing water - even indoors.

WINDOWS, DOORS, AND ENTRYWAYS

Keep an eye on your doors and windows; if they are not properly sealed against wet conditions, you will know it right away. Entryways are also a potential problem area; make sure they are free of standing water and debris so that people don’t get hurt.

Our team of professionals here at SERVPRO of Brunswick are experienced in repairs and cleanup from damages caused by water, fire, and mold. You can call us at (912) 264 6094, or visit our website: SERVPRO of Brunswick

Keeping Your Restaurant's Carpet Clean

5/9/2018 (Permalink)

As the owner of a restaurant, you have a long list of cleaning requirements, and your nightly checklist has to be followed to the letter in order to keep your business in tip-top shape, ready for the next business day. Every item has to be thoroughly washed and sparkling clean each and every day; the kitchen flooring, stovetops and ovens, utensils, pots and coffee makers…. And then there’s the front of house and the bar area - bathrooms, host stand, and all those wine glasses, just to mention a few more items! But you and your team know how to handle it.

Flooring in a busy restaurant can be a separate issue, however. Many eateries these days have hardwood floors, which have to be treated regularly to avoid damage from high heels, spills, and scratches from table and chair movement.

But maybe your establishment has carpeting, instead! A nightly vacuum and spot cleaning will go a long way in preventing potential mold growth and other smelly possibilities, but the carpets will still need a regular deep cleaning due to all of the foot traffic. Spills on carpeting don’t come up quite as easily or as completely as those on a hardwood floor. We know you have spent a lot of thought and money on choosing just the right carpeting for your place of business, and a carpet in need of deep cleaning can look dull and worn, the colors no longer as bright and fresh, and that can reflect negatively on your guest’s experience. Make sure a deep cleaning is on your cleaning checklist!

Here at SERVPRO of Brunswick, we are equipped to handle the toughest carpet cleaning jobs of all. Our business is experienced with cleanups from fire and water damage in both homes and large commercial enterprises. Call us today at (912) 264 6094, and you can also visit our website: SERVPRO of Brunswick We also handle mold remediation!

    • Make sure everyone knows your evacuation routes and knows where to stay.
    • Stock emergency supplies, and pack to-go bags.

  • During a storm:
    • Follow all guidance from your local authorities. If you are advised to evacuate, grab your to-go bag and your loved ones and leave immediately.

Three Ways to Prevent Mold in Your Bathroom

5/2/2018 (Permalink)

Everyone is aware that mold thrives on lingering moisture. Rooms that provide access to water and are not well-ventilated are in danger, and your bathroom is at the top of that list! There is water in use in the bath area throughout the day, and of course doors and windows are shut and/or curtained. These conditions are very inviting for a colony of mold spores.

Mold can, and will, grow on numerous types of material in your bathroom, such as shower curtains, wallpaper, drywall, grout, and flooring. It is unsightly, smells bad, and can be dangerous to your health. Once it takes hold, it is impossible to eradicate completely, so your best bet will always be to prevent it from the outset.

Here are three tips on how to prevent mold in your bathroom:

  • Make sure your bathroom is properly ventilated. Use the vent system and fans anytime your tub or shower is in use to keep down the moisture in the air. Leave these running for at least 30 minutes after their use is over.
  • Wash items in your bath regularly. Rugs should be washed and completely dried on a regular basis, while your shower/bath walls need to be wiped down and dried as often as possible. Cleansing and drying the walls and floors in the bathroom after use are also great ways to keep mold from gaining a foothold in this space! Purchasing a dehumidifier can be a really great idea, too - especially for bathrooms that see a tremendous amount of use or seem to be especially difficult to dry out.
  • Use mold resistant materials. Paint, flooring, and even shower curtains can all be purchased containing mold resistant materials, and these can go a long way towards keeping your bathing area mold free. Why not get a head start?

Here at SERVPRO of Brunswick, we have your best interests at heart. We want you to be safe and healthy! Call us today for help with mold remediation, or for your large cleanup needs such as damages from flooding or fire. Avoiding Storm Damage This Spring

4/17/2018 (Permalink)

Storms in the spring-time are something you will want to be ready for. Bad weather is often unpredictable, so you will need to take steps to keep your home and business safe from storm damage.

It is a smart idea to conduct an inspection of your home or business and grounds before inclement weather hits. A leaky roof or windows can cause big problems during heavy rainfall and strong winds. Do all your exterior doors and windows fit correctly, and are they properly weather-stripped? When is the last time you took a good look at the roofing of all the buildings on your property? These are all great questions to keep in mind.

Loose shutters and unstable large trees and bushes can be a danger in high winds. Trim back trees and bushes with large heavy branches that are not in good condition so that windows and vehicles are not in danger of storm damage in windy conditions.

Many homes in older cities have drainage ditches or creeks on the property. Take time to inspect these areas and remove debris or dirt that might obstruct the flow of water from a heavy rain. A clogged drainage ditch or creek bed can cause a lot of damage by flooding property during, or even after, a storm. Drainage can be an issue in parking areas as well, so you will want to consider sand-bagging in some instances.

Do you have a system in place that will help you to get information to everyone you care about in case of a weather emergency? Most of us use our cell phones to communicate these days, but in the case of a bad storm, your cell phone service could be at risk. You might consider installing a good old-fashioned landline in case area cell phone towers are damaged or go down. If you or a family member gets stuck at work or out doing errands, others will worry, so keeping those lines of communication open can keep everyone safe and worry-free.

The SERVPRO team of Brunswick is here to help in the event of storm damage, fire damage, or mold issues. You can give us a call today at (912) 264 6094, or visit us on our website:

Preventing Mold Growth in the Kitchen

4/17/2018 (Permalink)

The kitchen is one of the most susceptible areas of your house when it comes to mold growth, and it’s no wonder; there is water everywhere in the kitchen on a daily basis! You’ll need to practice preventive measures to ensure that you don’t develop a mold issue in one of the most important, and busy, rooms in your home.

The kitchen has a higher moisture level that most of the other rooms in your house, of course, and surfaces can become moldy quickly if not kept dry. Once mold has established a hold on an area, it can come back even more quickly every time the humidity rises.

Here are some tips to preventing mold in the first place:

  • Paint your kitchen (and bath areas) with mold resistant paint. Products of this type are readily accessible at your local hardware or home goods store.
  • When doing any type of repair or renovation in this area, check with a professional to find any available products that contain mold-resistant ingredients.
  • Avoid standing water in this area of the home. During floor cleaning, use less water than you might otherwise, and always dry off countertops after cleaning, paying special attention to cracks and crevasses.
  • As with all windows in your home, ensure that weather stripping is in good repair in advance of bad weather.
  • Keep an eye on older refrigerators for leaks from hoses and pipes leading to walls. Move them away from the wall periodically and clean behind and underneath them and take a good look while you are back there.
  • Ensure your kitchen area is well-ventilated, and you can always use a dehumidifier if you feel it necessary.

Keeping mold out of your kitchen will contribute to an overall cleaner space for the preparation of food and for entertaining and socializing. After all, the kitchen is almost always the gathering place of a home!

Here at SERVPRO of Brunswick, we have the experience, knowledge, and expertise necessary to help you with any mold damage or preventive practices. We are also available for cleanup after fire and water damage. Call us today at (912) 264 6094, or visit our website: SERVPRO of Brunswick

The Difference Between Mold Removal and Mold Remediation

4/10/2018 (Permalink)

Mold spores cannot be detected by the naked eye as a spore, and they exist naturally almost everywhere. They are microscopic and can be found both indoors and out. Removing all mold from a home or business is actually impossible!

Mold becomes a true issue when it gets out of balance and its growth explodes. When the conditions are warm, wet, and dark, this can happen easily, and when it does, you will need the services of a professional.

Some professional restoration businesses advertise mold removal and even go so far as to guarantee the removal of all mold, but this is not really possible; it IS possible, however, to remediate mold in your home or business. To remediate means to bring mold back to its normal and natural level. A qualified restoration company like SERVPRO of Brunswick understands the science behind mold and its growth, and we have the training and experience to remediate the mold in your home or business.

Every situation where mold damage is found is going to be totally different and will require a specific solution, but in general, the mold remediation process remains the same.

If you believe that you have an unnatural mold situation developing, call our team at SERVPRO of Brunswick and schedule an inspection and mold damage assessment. Our team will take steps to contain the mold and filtrate the air of the area affected. All mold and materials will be removed and contents and belongings of the area will be cleaned thoroughly. We will then undertake the restoration of your property and make sure you are mold-damage free.

Here are some things to be aware of:

  • Mold spores float along in the air and can enter a home or business through windows, doors, or HVAC systems. They can even hitch a ride on your pet!
  • Mold is microscopic; don’t expect to see it with your naked eye.
  • Mold growth can happen in as little as 24-48 hours! A higher-than-normal humidity level indoors can encourage the growth of mold colonies.
  • Mold produces a strong musty odor.
  • Mold produces irritants and can be hazardous to your health.

Call us here at SERVPRO of Brunswick at (912) 264 6094, or visit our website: SERVPRO of Brunswick if you are in need of mold remediation.

Checking Your Garage for Mold Growth

4/3/2018 (Permalink)

As a Georgia homeowner, you are no stranger to extreme weather. From heavy rainstorms and thunderstorms to extreme heat and tornadoes, you’ve seen it all. The combination of high temperatures paired with humid conditions creates the perfect opportunity for mold to establish itself in your garage. Mold will thrive in dark, moist and unventilated places - which describes most garages. If yours is attached to your home, you may benefit from the cooler, drier air inside your home, but it will only make conditions slightly better. The best way to stay on top of a mold issue is to do regular inspections of your garage for the sights and scents that spell trouble.

You will want to take a look around a day or two after extremely wet weather during the warmer months. Don’t just walk around - move a few things and look at the places where the walls join the floor, and in the corners. Check out the ceiling closely, and if the lighting is bad, you can always install better lighting or use a flashlight. Doing this on a regular basis can also keep you informed as to whether your roof or walls have experienced any issues or damage leading to leaks.

Of course, the best way to handle mold is to use preventive measures in the first place. Here are a few ideas that can help:

  • Keep your garage well-ventilated
  • Use a dehumidifier, especially during the stormy months
  • Make sure your garage door is properly sealed
  • Organize all stored items on shelves, using the floor and walls as little as possible
  • Don’t store cardboard in your garage
  • Remove any standing water immediately and dry area completely
  • Trim back shrubs and plants near the garage, not allowing overgrowth

Keeping an eye out for mold and practicing preventive measures is important for you as a homeowner. If you suspect that your home or business has developed a mold problem, SERVPRO of Brunswick is standing by to help! We are also experienced in cleanup after water and fire damage. Protecting Your Commercial Property from Water Damage

4/3/2018 (Permalink)

We are all familiar with the damage that water can do to homes and businesses after a heavy rain or the flooding that sometimes comes afterwards. Usually, disasters of this kind are unexpected, so planning ahead for what might happen during storm season can keep your commercial property safe from water damage.

Winter and Spring bring lots of water, either by steady rains, or ice and snow, and all that water can present a lot of problems. Make an inspection around your place of business; are you prepared for wet weather? Some questions you might ask yourself are:

  • Do exterior doors fit tightly?
  • Are both doors and windows properly weather-stripped?
  • Does your parking area have a well-maintained drainage area?
  • Are all rain-gutters and spouts ready for the deluge?

The roof of your office area, your warehouse, or your storage area needs to be properly cared for, as well, to protect your product, machinery, and office furniture from water damage through leaks and seepage.

A well-maintained parking area with proper drainage will divert water away from cars, allowing clients and work staff to get to and from their vehicles safely. If people have to wade in from their cars, your floors will suffer, and a slip-and-fall accident is a distinct possibility. Conduct an inspection of the parking areas of your business before wet weather sets in, and then check periodically; avoid a bill for damages due to potholes from an unhappy customer by staying on top of the situation. Consider sand-bagging known problem areas, as well, such as a low-lying entrance or a municipal drainage ditch near your property.

Clean rain-gutters and spouts regularly to remove dirt and debris, preventing backflow from heavy rain; this can end up in your walls, creating the perfect breeding ground for mold.

Power lines and telephone poles near to your place of business can be an issue when storm season comes. Contact your utility companies and ask them to come take a look prior to wet weather to make sure you, your business, and your employees will be safe. Be aware of the condition of any large trees on your property. If the grounds of your place of business become saturated, a tree with an unstable root base can fall and create problems for you, your employees, and your customers.

The team here at SERVPRO of Brunswick is standing ready to help in any way we can! We have the expertise to handle water and fire damage and specialize in mold remediation. If you have sustained water damage to your property, give us a call today at (912) 264 6094, or visit  on our website: SERVPRO of Brunswick

First Steps in Cleaning Fire and Smoke Damage

3/27/2018 (Permalink)

Putting out a fire in your home or business requires, of course, water or some kind of chemicals, such as are in a fire extinguisher. Those can, unfortunately, result in even more destruction to your property that you will have to take care of after the fire is extinguished.

Once the fire is out, any water that was used will need to be dried as soon as possible, since carpets and floors are particularly susceptible to mold issues if left damp for too long. Water can also damage your walls if they have to be soaked, so drying those materials is also important.

Chemical extinguishers leave toxic residues behind, and that will need to be cleaned up right away. Of course, using these chemicals is preferable to letting a fire spread, but the cleanup aftermath can be quite extensive and costly.

The SERVPRO team of Brunswick is available for you to perform any professional services, such as humidification, and the cleanup of any harmful chemicals left behind. We can also assess your situation and let you know of any possible mold growth that is or might be taking place due to a damp atmosphere.

Soot cleanup is the next issue; soot results from incompletely burned organic matter and can do serious damage to your home if left untreated. It is able to penetrate such items as upholstered furniture, draperies, carpets, and walls. SERVPRO is experienced in dealing with these types of problems, and we can help assess your situation. Air ducts and all HVAC filters will need to be replaced, and we can do that as well.

Smoke destruction can be handled after water and soot are taken care of. Smoke damage gets worse the longer it goes untreated, causing unpleasant odors that can even be harmful. Perhaps it is at its most damaging when it comes to the fabric of any textiles in your home, such as furniture, clothing, and carpet.

Don’t hesitate to call us here at SERVPRO of Brunswick for help with cleanup after fire or water damage. We are also the folks to call when a mold issue arises. Call us at (912) 264 6094 or visit our website:  SERVPRO of Brunswick

Benefits of Keeping a Clean Work Environment

3/20/2018 (Permalink)

Keeping your work environment clean, neat, and tidy is a benefit for everyone that is involved with your business, and there are several reasons why that is so. Some might come to mind immediately, while other reasons may not be so obvious at first.

The first and foremost reason to keep a work environment clean is for the health and safety of the workforce. A community bathroom that is not kept in a sanitary condition can be unhealthy and cause sicknesses to go the rounds of the employees. Walls, floors, and facilities need to be cleaned and sanitized on a regular basis, and, depending on how many people use it daily, it may need to be cleaned every single day.

Safety is another concern. Spills in the office that are not cleaned up, or trash that is not contained, can cause tripping and falling situations. Your employees and co-workers should always be encouraged to clean up after themselves, especially in high traffic areas or areas where customers will be.

If there is a company kitchen, utensils need to be washed and put away daily, especially the sharp items. The refrigerator will require emptying of leftovers at the end of the week, so that moldy food is not causing odor problems in the building.

Your customers will appreciate your clean work environment, and it will show them that you care and that you pay attention to detail. Some of the most successful businesses in the world are the cleanest and neatest places of all.

Working in a clean and fresh workspace is good for company morale, and people will be proud of their environment if it looks and smells nice. A happy and comfortable employee is a productive employee, and that is certainly good for everyone!

Call SERVPRO of Brunswick for your professional cleaning needs. We specialize in water and fire damage cleanup and are experts at mold remediation. Our phone number is (912) 264 6094 and our website is: SERVPRO of Brunswick

Keeping Your HVAC Clean and Running Into Spring

3/20/2018 (Permalink)

Your HVAC unit has been working hard, and while Spring is peeking over the horizon, cold weather isn’t quite over yet. And then, before you know it, it will warm up and you’ll need the air conditioner on!

Some simple maintenance practices for your unit will keep it running at peak efficiency no matter the weather.

Probably the single most important maintenance task that ensures the efficiency of your HVAC is to routinely clean and/or replace its filters on a regular basis. Clogged and dirty filters block the normal airflow; replace an old filter with a new one can lower your energy consumption anywhere from 5% to 15%. Some kinds of filters are re-usable, while others must be replaced. Make sure you know the right type to use for your particular unit. The filter may need to be replaced more often if your HVAC is in constant use, subjected to high amounts of dust, or if you have furry pets.

If you find that the HVAC unit at your home or business needs more than just regular maintenance, call us here at SERVPRO of Brunswick. A well-trained technician will be able to find and correctly diagnose and fix any problems you may be experiencing.

Here are a few of the things you can expect your SERVPRO technician to do:

  • Check for correct fluid levels
  • Check for and seal any duct leakage in central systems
  • Measure airflow through the evaporator coil
  • Oil motors and check the belts for wear
  • Check the thermostat for accuracy
  • Inspect all electrical terminals, clean and tighten connections

Between you and the team at SERVPRO of Brunswick, you should be able to keep your HVAC unit clean and running all year round!

Here at SERVPRO of Brunswick, we are proud and happy to help the people in our area with all their cleanup and maintenance needs. We are experienced in fire and water damage cleanup, and we are the folks to call when you need help with a mold issue. Call us at (912) 264 6094 or visit our website: SERVPRO of Brunswick

Three Causes of Water Damage That You Might Not Expect

3/13/2018 (Permalink)

Water damage is every home and business owner’s concern. We are all aware that a roof needs to be inspected for signs of that kind of damage, or that plumbing is something to keep your eye on as it ages. These are areas that we would expect to be a problem when it comes to property damage.

But what about your washing machine connections? That’s a place where there can be hard water deposits that can corrode pipes and hoses, causing them to explode when you are not looking for it. And if it happens when you are at work, there can be a significant issue by the time you return home! Make an inspection of your laundry room part of your routine, and pay attention to all the outlets, hoses, and piping, to make sure they are in working order.

Another part of your house or business that can become damaged by water over time is around the base of your toilets. As your bathrooms age, the seals that were installed at the time the house was built or the toilet was put in will break down and corrode, sometimes developing tiny holes that will leak small amounts of water. This little leakage can really hurt your flooring without you even noticing it until it’s too late. Keeping records of the dates of renovations and repairs for appliances, etc. can help to remind you to take a look every now and then to see what needs your attention.

Many older homes and businesses may have heating and cooling units on their roof; this area will need a thorough checkup before the beginning, and during, every season that will require heavy usage. A water leak from the pipes going to that unit can do a lot of damage to the roof, attic, and walls underneath. Because they are out of sight they can be forgotten about, when it comes to water.

The team at SERVPRO of Brunswick is always standing ready to help in the event of any kind of emergency; we are experts in dealing with water damage, fire damage, and mold remediation! Call us at (912) 264 6094 or visit our website:  SERVPRO of Brunswick

A Carpet Cleaning Checklist for Your Home

3/6/2018 (Permalink)

After the long winter, it’s probably time to have your carpets cleaned. The kids, the spouse, Rover, and the relatives have been tramping in and out all through the season, and even though everybody, except Rover, wipes their feet, your carpets are suffering.

Here is a checklist of things you need to consider when planning your carpet cleaning:

  • Do you want to DIY, or call a professional? Take stock of the time it will demand to clean your carpets thoroughly. A professional cleaning company such as our SERVPRO of Brunswick team can have it done while you’re at work!
  • A professional company has the experience and the expertise to handle anything that might come up. They will have access to the best equipment possible.
  • The most efficient of technologies, such as hot water extraction, are available to a company that has cleaning expertise - speeding up the process considerably, by the way.
  • Before we start, we do a complete analyzation of your carpet situation to make sure we are knowledgeable concerning your unique carpet needs. A house with a pet is going to need different treatment than a house without, even if Rover is very polite!
  • Because we can accelerate your dry time, you can come home from work and relax, as long as you take your shoes off!
  • No carpet is stain proof; even though all carpets sold today have some sort of anti-stain treatment applied, these treatments wear off over time. Professional cleaning companies can remove almost all household stains. If they cannot, it’s time for new carpet.
  • If your house is smelling musty, a deep cleaning should take care of it. But keep in mind that SERVPRO of Brunswick is experienced in mold detection and remediation, so we can keep an eye out for your health and safety.

Call us here at SERVPRO of Brunswick: (912) 264 6094 or visit our website at SERVPRO of Brunswick for all your carpet cleaning needs! We also handle fire and water damage.

Chimney Cleaning Tips for Your Brunswick Home

2/27/2018 (Permalink)

Gosh, it’s great to have a fireplace. It’s where people gather during colder weather (even down here in south Georgia in the Brunswick area), and it lends warmth to all. A lit fireplace provides a wonderful ambience to any room, with the flames casting their red glow on every surface, making cheeks look more pink and causing eyes to glow. They are the envy of all during a snowstorm, and can make a Christmas celebration even more perfect. The mantel is a great place for a nativity scene or woodland branches, and the perfect spot for Christmas cards, too.

But a fireplace can also be dangerous if not cared for properly. Animals can build nests during the warmer months, unbeknownst to the owner, and imagine what can happen then when the first fire of the season is lit! Or (as is the case now) a good cleaning before the warmer weather arrives is equally important!

Here are some chimney cleaning tips that can lessen the chance of a fire or a surprise.

First, do an inspection. If you have a steep roof, then this isn’t a DIY project, and you need to enlist the help of a professional. There are certified chimney sweeps throughout the country, including in the Brunswick area, and can help with this project.

During the inspection, you are looking for creosote buildup. It may not look like a big deal, but it ignites at only 451 degrees and expands from there, able to build to over 2,000 degrees. At that temperature, it can engulf your entire chimney and potentially destroy your home or cause some serious fire damage.

If you are in the habit of burning green wood, make sure you have your chimney cleaned or inspected every 50 burns or so. To know whether wood is green or not, look for moisture bubbling out from the cut ends of the log. Wet, green wood doesn’t burn cleanly and will send particles up your chimney, which in turn builds up as creosote and soot. Choose hardwoods such as oak or birch, which burn hotter and cleaner.

A professional cleaning would include an inspection for soot build-up and for an cracks or obstructions that could cause issues. Older chimneys can sometimes have gaps in the clay liner where mortar has fallen out, which causes water damage and can make your chimney unstable.

If you do find yourself in need of a chimney sweep, look for someone who is insured and properly certified in your Brunswick area. They will ensure that you are safe from fire damage due to an unkempt fireplace and chimney

The folks at SERVPRO of Brunswick have lots of experience in keeping the area surrounding your fireplace clean and are here to make it like it never happened if you do have fire damage in your home. We can also handle water damages and are experienced in mold prevention. Call us at (912)-264-9064 today, or visit us on our website:  SERVPRO of Brunswick, Georgia

Caring for Your Brunswick Hotel's Carpet

2/20/2018 (Permalink)

A busy hotel in Brunswick makes for a happy hotel owner! If you are experiencing a high occupancy percentage, then you are doing something right, and your guests know it.

You are also experiencing significant maintenance challenges, most likely. High traffic means more damage in those high traffic areas. And no area of your hotel sees more traffic than….the floor.

Properly caring for your hotel carpets is very important. First of all, while costs are something you are constantly aware of, keep in mind that you get what you pay for! A more expensive carpeting can last longer and be more cost efficient in the long run as well as being manufactured to handle high traffic situations much better, repelling heaving soiling and bad odors from wet, icy, or muddy conditions.

There are a lot of great products on the market that you can use to treat your carpets against damages and odors caused by spills and flooding from bathrooms, like overflowing toilets or broken piping. These products can also keep your carpets looking fresh even after muddy boots have come through.

Make sure your housekeeping team is vacuuming thoroughly on a daily basis, taking care to work in corners and on the edging; dingy corners and edges of carpeted areas can, if not cleaned regularly, make an entire room look and smell unpleasant from potential mold growth. They also need to be trained and encouraged to communicate with you and your management team whenever they see (or smell) a problem - mold can take hold quickly, and once it’s established and beginning to spread, it can be difficult to get rid of. And that is absolutely not something you want to have happening in your Brunswick hotel!

A professional deep cleaning of your carpets throughout your establishment regularly can help to keep your whole Brunswick hotel looking and smelling great, and deep cleaning can preserve carpeting and help it to last longer, which will save you money.

SERVPRO of Brunswick is experienced in those big cleaning jobs, and we are always here to help with 24/7 emergency restoration services. Call us at (912) 264 9064 or visit our website: http://www.SERVPRObrunswick.com/

Preventing Electrical Fires in Your Brunswick Home and Office

2/20/2018 (Permalink)

Electrical fires happen more often than you would think. Over 25,000 electrical fires happen here in the United States, and approximately 1,300 people lose their lives because of them annually; and even if the damage is not that extreme, fire damage can be extremely damaging to a home or business, oftentimes leading to unexpected water damage from firefighting efforts as well. There are some simple steps you can take to prevent these electrical fires from happening in your home and office, and we will share them here.

One of the most important steps you can take is to have your Brunswick home or business inspected for hazardous situations that can cause a fire. A licensed electrician can help to keep you, your loved ones, and your employees safe by letting you know what needs to be done. Replace wiring in older homes, since wiring is not made to last forever.

A very common cause of electrical fires is electrical cord, plug, and outlet damage. If these items are found to be tattered or frayed, worn out or showing burn signs, they need to be replaced immediately. Cords in poor condition can overheat or cause sparks, and so, a fire. Replacing damaged cords is a simple and relatively inexpensive safeguard against electrical fires and can even be purchased for your appliances separately if any are in poor condition.

In this day and age of digital everything, take steps to avoid overloading your outlets. Overburdened sockets are another risk factor for an electrical fire, and common as well. The United States Fire Administration recommends that you buy power strips that come equipped with internal overload protection; this feature will ensure that a strip shuts off its power supply as soon as it becomes overloaded, helping prevent fire damage.

Another hazard is the portable electric space heater, and most people are aware of the danger. But any appliance that plugs in can be dangerous if not used carefully. Flammable materials such as blankets, towels, and rugs, need to be watched and kept away from any appliances that produce heat or can overheat, as that can easily start a fire.

Faulty wiring is another hazard, and if a flickering lamp or sparking outlet is something you experience, contact a licensed electrician in the Brunswick area to make the repairs necessary. If anything that conducts electricity feels warm to the touch, have your electrician check it out and see if it needs to be replaced.

Just a few minutes of preventive measures and a few dollars to replace those items that could be dangerous can save lives and your Brunswick property, and save you from expensive fire damage clean up.

The folks at SERVPRO of Brunswick are experienced in helping to keep your home and property free from fire hazards and fire damage, as well as water damage and mold growth. Call them at (912) 264 9064 or visit them at their website:

How to Protect Your Brunswick Beach Home from Storm Damage

2/13/2018 (Permalink)

Most people dream of having a beach home, and you have to admit - it’s pretty awesome. The view of the waves and the dunes from the Golden Isles and the Brunswick area are always amazing and a welcome sight at the end of the day, and the fact that you can walk down to the water in seconds is always something that warms your heart.

But there are those times of the year when a beach house in the Brunswick area is a worry. Summers are idyllic, and even Spring isn’t bad, but Fall? And the hurricanes? That’s another story entirely.

To be prepared, you will need to inspect your property regularly and look for trouble spots before those stormy times come.

Over time, every house experiences damage from weather, and you want to make sure there are no loose ends to wrap up. Loose siding or shutters? How about that roof? Do your windows close properly, and do all exterior doors fit as they should? Can those shutters close the way they should to protect your windows during a storm? Strong winds can make short work of those parts of your home that are not in as good repair as they should be.

The landscaping at a beach home in the Brunswick area is usually tropical in nature, which means palm trees. And they can get pretty big! Have your trees and other vegetation been trimmed appropriately and removed if they are not doing well? During a storm, a lot of damage can be done by flying branches and palm fronds, or at the very least, they can leave you a really big mess to clean up!

Salt air is rough on beach-side houses and buildings, so keeping an eye on your property for damages is a good idea. Rotting wood on your home can become a hazard during storms if not cared for. Flying debris can break windows and severely damage cars left on the street.

The SERVPRO team of Brunswick is standing at the ready to help you with any storm damage you may have suffered, as well as working with you to prevent those damages in future. From fire damage to mold prevention, SERVPRO is a friend in need! Contact us at (912) 264 6094 or on our website: http://www.SERVPRObrunswick.com/

Avoiding Water Damage in Your St. Simons Home

2/6/2018 (Permalink)

Spring is just around the corner, believe it or not. And it’s time to think about the rains that will come to the Brunswick area. Is your home safe from water damage? It’s a good idea to make preparations now, before it’s too late. If you aren’t prepared beforehand for what can happen, your home can suffer more than it needs to.

A lot of us live in areas where we don’t need to worry about flash-flooding or a hillside collapsing, but even so, the steady rains of spring-time can present problems. Take a good look around your home; is the weather-stripping in doors and windows in good repair, ready for damp conditions? Do exterior doors fit tightly and close as they should? The roof needs to be completely watertight, as well, to protect furniture and other possessions from water damage.

Your driveway needs to have a well-planned drainage system so you and your family can get to and from their vehicles safely. If people have to wade into your house, your floors will suffer, and a slip-and-fall accident due to wet floors can be a disaster for everyone. Make sure you keep an eye on potholes, as water can dig pretty deep in a very short period of time!

Rain gutters and spouts need to be checked periodically; if a rain gutter becomes clogged with debris such as dead leaves or small branches, they aren’t going to be able to drain away all that rain water. As water backs up, it will leak back into the walls of your building, sometimes without you knowing it, and you can find yourself with water damage in your walls, and possibly even a mold problem.

Unstable power lines and telephone poles can be a possible issue if the ground becomes saturated during a spring rainstorm. Contact your Brunswick utilities companies and have them come take a good look prior to wet weather to make sure you and your loved ones won’t suffer an accident or damages due to falling utility poles and/or wiring.

Paper records will be lost if exposed to water; make sure that your hard copies are kept in a manner that will preserve them in case of any water damage. Scanning them and saving to your computer system is always a good idea, and backing up those computer records will keep your business in working order, no matter what comes! For insurance purposes, it might be a good idea to create a photographic record of your property and possession, in case of water damages due to bad weather. Save these photos to the cloud and/or a cd so that they will always be accessible.

If your home is built on or near a flood plain in the Brunswick area, make sure you have a communication system in place that everyone understands clearly - in the case of an evacuation, does your family know what to do and where to go?

Being prepared is very important when it comes to water damages, either from rain or flood.

The SERVPRO team of Brunswick is standing ready to help you anytime you and your family need it. Whether you need assistance with fire or water damages, or if mold has become an issue in your home, give them a call at (912) 264 9064 or visit their website:

Benefits of having a dehumidifier in your Brunswick home or office

1/30/2018 (Permalink)

All of us here at SERVPRO of Brunswick want to do all that we can to help you avoid water damage or mold within your home. One of the best ways you can do this is by using a dehumidifier in your home or office. Most versions of these machines are quiet and affordable, but best of all, they offer many benefits to the average homeowner.

Once a dehumidifier reduces the level of humidity in your home or office, you will find that your space is less likely to host common allergens like mold, mildew, dust, or mites. Dehumidifiers will not disrupt your day to day life in any way. Today’s models make very little noise while they are running. Most homeowners don’t even notice them as they efficiently do their job in the background.

If you have noticed any strange odors in your home, a dehumidifier can help with that too. Odors often come from mold and mildew and resemble the same scent one finds with musty homes or rotting debris. Besides eliminating odors, dehumidifiers lower the possibility of mildew growing on furniture, clothing, or other household linens such as the bedding and curtains.

Dehumidifiers also offer a variety of health-related benefits. Many people notice a reduction in skin irritations as well as respiratory issues. The added moisture these machines produce make it easier to breathe.

Once the humidity levels are lower, even the housework gets lighter. Clothing dries faster, cereal and bread lasts longer, and you’ll eliminate the rust and corrosion that can sometimes be found on electronics, computer equipment, and tools. You will also notice that there is less dust in the house, which means less cleaning.

Don’t worry yourself over running a dehumidifier in your home. It won’t increase your monthly utility bills. In fact, a dehumidifier can actually lower your energy bill by helping out the air conditioner. AC’s run more efficiently when humidity levels are lower. If the air conditioning doesn’t have to remove humidity, it doesn’t work as hard as it might otherwise have to. AC systems that work harder can wear out quicker, which leads to even more expenses when they need repaired or replaced.

Tree Trimming Helps You Protect Your Home

1/23/2018 (Permalink)

Trees offer countless benefits to a home's landscape. Their appearance, shade and animal habitats are such an important and valued part of a property that many people are reluctant to remove trees. However, when tree limbs or the trees themselves become damaged or diseased due to age, invasive insects or storm damage, they can become a liability rather than an asset. The importance of including trees in a home maintenance plan can't be overstated.

Tree limbs that have died or are diseased are much more likely to cause damage to a property or home if they're ignored. Most limbs typically come crashing down during strong thunderstorms or high winds. However, it's not unheard of to have a large limb or even an entire tree fall at a random time. To help prevent these accidents from damaging your yard or, even worse, your home, it's best to cut off diseased, dying or dead limbs as soon as you identify them.

Weather events other than thunderstorms and winds can also do serious damage to trees as well. In coastal Georgia, heavy snow is a rare event, but ice storms are somewhat more common. Freezing rain that falls, even as drizzle or light rain, can do serious damage to trees due to the accumulated weight of the water which freezes on every twig and limb. The heavy weight often bends limbs and can crack or break them. If freezing rain has damaged your tree, experts recommend that you have the damage assessed and the limbs removed as soon as possible.

Damaged or diseased trees that aren't cared for as a part of routine home maintenance can bring even more disaster to your property. A tree limb that crashes through a roof or window during a storm, or topples due to icing, opens the way for rain to further damage your home's interior. If you find yourself in this situation, experts recommend that you immediately call SERVPRO of Brunswick for help with cleaning and restoring your home's interior. Whether your home has experienced storm damage, flooding or fire damage, trained SERVPRO of Brunswick restoration technicians can help you clean and restore your home.

When Winter Water Damage Wreaks Havoc on Your Home

1/16/2018 (Permalink)

When your home has a flood, at SERVPRO of Brunswick, we understand how important it is to get the mess cleaned up quickly. Water damage to your home can cause structural weakness and mold or mildew to grow. Whether a pipe burst because of an overnight freeze, or you have a leak in your water heater, you don't want to wait for cleanup services.

During the winter months, your home is more susceptible to water damage caused by ice dams and frozen pipes that can burst. If ice builds up in your gutters, this ice can come in to your home. The ice will melt, causing water problems in your ceiling, walls and floors. If you notice ice dams forming on your gutters, or you have long icicles forming on the edge of your roof, it's time for some investigating.

When the heat in your home hits the snow or ice that is on your roof, it will melt slightly. A home that has a lot of ice buildup is one that is not properly insulated. This leads to all kinds of winter water damage. If your walls get wet but you don't know it, you can have a mold infestation quickly.

Water damage can happen right away, in the event of a flood, or it can occur over a period of time as in the case of a slow leak from ice dams. No matter what happens, once you discover that water has infiltrated your home, you need to get the water cleaned up.

While you may be able to clean up some of the mess on your own, it takes a professional to ensure that the water you can't see is cleaned up as well. You will be able to clean up puddles, but you aren't going to be able to find water that has seeped into carpets, floors and walls.

When you have water in your home, you have to find the source of the water and have the damage cleaned up by a professional company. If you clean up the mess yourself, you can leave behind small amounts of moisture that will cause mold to grow in your home. You'll have a bigger mess than you started with by trying to save a few dollars cleaning up the water on your own.

Making a Family Emergency Plan

1/10/2018 (Permalink)

Community Making a Family Emergency Plan Make sure your family knows what to do when disaster strikes your Brunswick community

Do you need to update the preparations for emergencies in your home? Is safety something you have let slide since you've become so busy lately? SERVPRO of Brunswick has a few key tips to help you get your emergency plan back on track before you need it.

Listen to the experts and research local disasters before making a plan

The safety of your family is your highest priority, and we completely understand. Staying secure is the top concern for our families as well. Before you make a plan, the American Red Cross says that you should consider the kinds of disasters you are likely to experience in your location. For instance, you would not plan for a massive earthquake in tornado alley, like you would not prepare for a tsunami in Wisconsin. The goal is to know what you are dealing with so that you can make appropriate preparations.

Put your emergency preparedness plan on paper

Children are as likely as adults to forget the steps to safety. To make sure that everyone in your home is on the same page, it is an excellent idea to print out a copy of the plan and place it in every bedroom or a central location in the home. This way, every member of the family has easy access to the plan and can practice it often. Quarterly or monthly practice sessions make sure the plan stays fresh in everyone's mind.

Plan for evacuations, and practice, practice, practice

No one can get too much preparation for tornadoes, floods, and hurricanes. Inform your children where you want them to meet you if you get separated or need to leave your home for safety. Talk to family members about the ways you will communicate when the worst happens. Getting your family as comfortable as possible with the steps to safety when disaster strikes is a vital part of keeping everyone alive in the long run.

For the times when there is nothing you can do to avoid danger, SERVPRO of Brunswick is ready and equipped to handle any emergency you have from fires to floods. Keep your family safe with an emergency plan, and when you need a trusted partner to help you get things back in order after Mother Nature flexes her wings, you can trust on SERVPRO to get to you fast.

On The Importance of Replacing Your Cleaning Supplies

1/10/2018 (Permalink)

Cleaning On The Importance of Replacing Your Cleaning Supplies Keep a close watch on your cleaning supplies, Brunswick!

Maintaining a home or office and keeping it clean and bright is an endless job. The day-to-day work of having a place kept clean for a family or a group of employees takes a lot of energy. It also requires attention to detail and a ready stock of soaps, scrubbers, and bottles of Windex. As any homemaker or professional cleaner knows, you can never clean enough! This is especially true in a home with small children and/or pets, as well as in a busy office where late night meetings often need extra food.

A Constant Cleaning Vigil

Keeping that home or office clean requires constant cleaning vigilance. It’s amazing how many dust bunnies can creep in under an office sofa or a living room couch. Though we all love our pets, the person in charge of keeping a pet environment clean may be forgiven for viewing the family cat or dog as a walking dust bunny. The trail of fur and dust one pet can leave around a home is amazing, but again, that’s why the cleanliness gods invented fur brushes and dust mops.

Restocking Supplies

One of the keys to keeping that home or office clean, bright, and smelling fresh is to keep the stock of cleanup supplies fresh, on a weekly basis. There’s nothing worse than confronting a serious pet mess or the aftermath of a late night office meeting (with Chinese takeout) and then realizing the Windex bottle is empty. Forgetting to restock is what makes these soul-killing cleanup crises more serious than they need to be. So be sure to pay attention to those supplies and refresh them.

Calling in Cleanup Reinforcement

If the rigors of constant cleanup become daunting, it may be wise to consider bringing in professional help, from a top-flight cleanup service like SERVPRO of Brunswick. SERVPRO is staffed by a dedicated and well-trained group of pros who know how to rehabilitate a messy home or office and get it looking spic and span in no time.

So if you’re confronting a cleanup job that’s too big to handle alone, call in SERVPRO of Brunswick.

Making the Most of your Fireplace this Winter

12/20/2017 (Permalink)

Fire Damage Making the Most of your Fireplace this Winter Make sure you adhere to all fire safety guidelines when enjoying your fireplace!

Winter is a great season for sitting around the fireplace, enjoying time with family and soaking in the Christmas spirit. Especially if you love using your fireplace. However, most people don’t know that they could be getting much more value out of it than they think! There’s more to the fireplace than lighting a log and huddling close to stay warm when it’s cold. SERVPRO of Brunswick has some tips for you to get more out of your fireplace this winter.

Wood Management

Most people will take whatever wood they can get and light it on fire without a second thought. There’s more to getting the most out of your fires than tossing wood on the spit! First, always ensure that any wood you burn is dry. Any type of moist wood can create an excessive amount of smoke, which means you’re not burning the full log and getting your money’s worth. Ensure that the wood is seasoned, dry, and from a trusted supplier.

When burning the logs, make sure they fit onto the spit to ensure that there is no fire safety hazard. Any log that sticks out is susceptible to have its embers float into the air, creating a hazard. Make sure the logs fit before placing them!

Cleaning Regularly

One of the biggest cleaning offenses that most people do is neglect to clean their chimney. It becomes a massive fire safety hazard if there is any type of blockage in the chimney. Make sure to clean during the winter months to avoid buildup, or hire a professional to help clean it for you. Being proactive here could help ensure the safety of you and your family.

Learn the Proper Way to Start a Fire

Too often people plop a piece of wood onto the spit and light it on fire. To get the most out of the burn, you need to start small and build yourself up to a decent fire. Begin by starting a small fire with dry kindling, and begin to add more piece of wood. Provide the fire with air to breathe, as this will help the fire spread slowly over the logs. Once the flames have stopped and the fire has come to a smoldering burn, leave it here for a bit before adding another log. Just because there is no visual flame doesn’t mean heat isn’t coming from the firepit! This will help conserve you firewood consumption, and keep you warm much longer!

Preparing for a Winter Storm in Georgia

12/11/2017 (Permalink)

Water Damage Preparing for a Winter Storm in Georgia Make sure your home is ready for the winter season!

Winter storms cause injuries to hundreds of Americans every year. Some people can even lose their lives due to improper use of heaters, automobile accidents on wintry roads, and exposure to cold. Winter storms in Georgia can range from a moderate snowfall to freezing rain. Winter storms bring wind-driven snow in the region that can last for days. Additionally, the storms include coastal flooding, massive snow accumulation, beach erosion, and cold temperatures. It is important to be prepared for this wide range of possibilities, even if you do not expect them to occur.

At SERVPRO of Brunswick, we advise homeowners in Georgia to observe proper preparation before the period to safeguard their properties and family members. Extreme winter storms lead to power outages, communication disruptions, and destruction of properties. Also, during this period, houses can even collapse due to prolonged water damage. At SERVPRO of Brunswick, we advise our clients to take proper safety precautions to reduce the dangers associated with winter storms. Below are essential safety and preparation tips to observe for a winter storm in Georgia.

Remove Broken Branches Around Your Home

You should always remove dead trees and broken branches from around your home. These trees can cause injuries, deaths, and damage the roof of your house. Additionally, broken branches can destroy your yard.

Clear Clogged Rain Gutters

Snow accumulation can damage clogged rain gutters. You should clear clogged rain gutters to prevent water damage on your roof. The process will allow water to flow away from your roof. Removal of debris in the gutters will prevent melting snow from building up.

Check your Chimney and Heating Equipment

If you have a chimney and plan on using it, always get proper cleaning to avoid storm damage. Additionally, have it inspected to ensure that the chimney is clear and efficient. Your heating system is crucial during the winter, so, before the season commences, you should check its functionality.

At SERVPRO of Brunswick, we also offer water damage restoration services. We have the right machinery to restore your home to its initial state after storm damage. We respond to your cleaning and restoration needs immediately after contacting us. We have a valid working permit to offer services to the residents of Georgia. Call us whenever you need us!

Preventing Electrical Fires While Decorating Your Home for the Holidays

12/11/2017 (Permalink)

Fire Damage Preventing Electrical Fires While Decorating Your Home for the Holidays We love the lights but stay safe this Christmas, Brunswick!

Christmas is one of the best holidays. The lights and decorations create such a wonderful atmosphere for everyone to enjoy. Decorating your household during the holidays is one of the great American pastimes. Families filling their neighborhoods with Christmas decorations is something we look forward to every year.

However, using these lights sometimes can create a safety hazard if not done properly. Fortunately, we here at SERVPRO of Brunswick have a couple of tips that will help you prevent dangerous electrical fires from happening when you plan to decorate. Here are the tips that’ll keep your family safe, as well as prevent any costly fire damage from happening to your home.

Only Use Certified Decorations

This one tip can be deceiving from the start but has huge ramifications if not noticed before it’s too late. While there are dozens of Christmas lights for sale during the winter time, make sure that you only use lights that state somewhere on the package that national laboratories have approved them for fire safety purposes. Take your time when shopping and pick the right lights to ensure that you’re avoiding fire damage in the event of an accident.

Avoid Overloading Surge Protectors

Let’s imagine for a second that you’ve bought dozens of Christmas lights and you’re getting ready to set them up for decoration. You have a couple of surge protectors ready, and you’re getting ready to plug almost all the lights on them to save space. Before you do this, wait! Overloading a surge protector can be incredibly dangerous and cause serious fire damage hazards. If the lights are left on constantly, it will create volatile conditions for the lights to potentially catch fire. Make sure you don’t overload your surge protectors and space out your lights If possible.

Don’t Leave the Lights On

Finally, one of the most important tips that will help ensure the safety of your family overnight. While you may want to have the ambient light of your Christmas tree illuminating down the hallway, please don’t! Whatever you do this holiday season, make sure not to leave the lights on overnight. This is an incredibly dangerous habit to have, as your chances of an electrical fire skyrocket exponentially. There is no need to leave lights on overnight, so make sure to unplug them before going to bed at night to avoid any type of electrical fire.

Safety Tips for Seasonal Yard Work

11/15/2017 (Permalink)

General Safety Tips for Seasonal Yard Work Those leaves aren't going to rake themselves, right!

For many people, seasonal yard work is a relaxing activity, however, thousands of people are injured while they are performing home maintenance tasks. Fortunately, most accidents can be prevented. SERVPRO of Brunswick offers some tips to stay safe during yard work.

Read Instruction Manuals

Read the instruction manual before operating new yard equipment. The owner's manual has important safety information. Check the manufacturer's website to learn about model recalls.

Practice Ladder Safety

A ladder should be placed on a level surface; never set ladders on crates or boxes. Always store ladders in a secure storage area.

Keep Children Away from Yard Equipment

The yard can be a dangerous place when it is cluttered with lawn equipment. Tools injure thousands of children every year, so keep young children inside while you are mowing the lawn.

Extension Cords and Fire Damage

Faulty electrical cords can cause fire damage. No cord should have any exposed wires. If the cord has minimal damage, seal the crack with electrical tape. Throw the cord in the trash if it has any exposed wires. Never run an extension cord through a puddle of water.

Wear Protective Gear

Lawnmowers can hit sticks and rocks. For your own safety, always wear long pants. To protect your eyes and ears, wear sunglasses and headphones. Wear sunscreen if you are going to be outdoors for several hours, even in the fall and winter months.

Store Chemicals in an Enclosed Area

Lawn chemicals will destroy weeds, but the products can also harm humans. Never leave an open bag of lawn fertilizer in the backyard; seal bags and keep the products away from children and pets.

Do Not Dig Without Approval

Contact your local utility company before digging a trench. If you do not contact the utility company, you might hit a sewer line and the repair bill can be very costly.

Be Mindful of Electricity

Do not leave electrical machines plugged in overnight. Before starting the equipment, make sure that the machine is in the off position. Always unplug the machine before attempting any repairs.

Be Aware of Toxic Plants

Research the toxic plants in your yard, as your backyard might have poison oak, ivy, and sumac.

And of course, never operate machinery while you are intoxicated, and do not overexert yourself.

Heavy human traffic

Personal habits such as the failure to remove shoes at the entrance, or heavy human traffic by family or clients mean you must wash the floor mats often.

Your children and pets

How Do You Know If Your Tree Is Dying?

10/27/2017 (Permalink)

General How Do You Know If Your Tree Is Dying? These are the signs to look for if you think your tree is dying.

How to Spot a Dying Tree on Your Property

Trees are one of nature's most beautiful gifts. But when your regular home maintenance schedule doesn't include tree inspection, trees can become a danger to your Brunswick property. Knowing signs of a dying tree are critical – before it's too late. Here are five ways to evaluate your trees.

  1. Have you seen chipping bark? No need to panic – yet. Trees commonly lose some outer shell here and there. A healthy tree will regenerate lost bark. However, if you're noticing that the trunk is not recovering or are seeing bare patches, it's a sign of a sick tree.
  2. Think back to the last wind or rain storm. Were there branches down afterward? If it was more than a handful, you may have a problem. Here's a good test: try to snap one of the fallen branches. Does it snap easily? That's a sign of a dead branch. A tougher snap indicates green wood and a healthy branch.
  3. How are the leaves? If there are bare branches in the height of summer, it's likely your tree is sick. Yellowing leaves before autumn hits? Dropping leaves early in the season? These are both indicators of disease. Take a look at your trees in the winter. Are there brown, brittle leaves still attached to branches? That's a telltale sign of a dead branch. What about evergreen trees? Red or yellow needles on the top half to top third of the tree can indicate a dying tree.
  4. Take a look at the base of the trunk – do you notice mushroom-like fungus? This type of fungus thrives on rotting wood. And unfortunately, once you're seeing visible decay on the outside of the tree, it's too late. Decay begins on the inside and works to the outside. If they haven't already, wood boring insects will quickly feast on the decay, weakening the tree further.
  5. Have there been any environmental changes or stressors to your trees? Construction can inadvertently damage a root system or newly expose a tree to the elements if surrounding trees were cut down – and both scenarios will weaken a tree.

It's important to identify and correct dying trees on your property and in the community before the disease can spread. There's nothing more dangerous to people or to property than falling trees and branches. If the worst happens and your property is damaged, SERVPRO of Brunswick is here to help.

Focus on Air Conditioning Vent Dusting

Dust can make the interior of your car look unattractive and neglected. It can make the interior of your vehicle feel less than welcome too. If you want to give your vehicle a thorough cleaning job, focus on dusting the middle of your air conditioning vents. It can help to use a paintbrush or foam brush. Once you're done, vacuum any and all remnants of dust you see. If you fail to do so, you could end up with dust in other parts of your vehicle.

Say Goodbye to All Hints of Gooey and Gummy Substances

People frequently eat food in their car. They inevitably spill their food once in a while as well. That's why it's not at all uncommon to spot gooey and gummy stains in vehicles. If you notice any inexplicable substances that fit this description, take action as soon as possible. Grab a Magic Eraser to do away with anything unsightly and icky. Magic Erasers can do wonders for people who want to scrub their vehicle interiors to glowing perfection.

Treat Your Dashboard Leather Like Royalty

The details mean so much in the car cleaning world. If you want your car to look like a million dollars for Ophelia's Classic Car Challenge, you need to focus on your dashboard. Your goal should be to make your dashboard leather shine. Olive oil can do the trick. If you want to polish, condition and pamper this leather, a little olive oil can go a long way.

Make Use of Soda

Soda can be an asset for people who want to clean their vehicles well, believe it or not. If you want your windshields to look flawless and immaculate, cola is your best friend. Cola can come in handy for people who want to cut noticeable streaking on their windshields. Cola has bubbles that do away with debris and grime.

Campfire Safety Tips

9/27/2017 (Permalink)

Fire Damage Campfire Safety Tips These campfire safety tips could save someone's life! Have fun but be careful!

Campfires can be a lot of fun, whether they are in the backyard or a remote wilderness area. However, anytime there is a fire, there is a risk of fire damage. With a campfire, the two primary concerns are falling into the fire and the fire escaping and burning the surrounding area. The good news is that there are a few simple things that can help you and your family to stay safe around the fire.

Before building a fire, you should make sure that it is safe and permissible to build the fire. Though there are a number of factors to consider, a general rule is that campfires should not be built when wind speeds are above 15 mph. Campfires are at lower risk of spreading when it is raining, the ground is wet or the temperature is low. In severely dry conditions, governmental authorities may ban all burning. A quick call to a park ranger, fire department or the police should help you to determine if there is a burning ban.

Tripping and falling into the fire is one of the most serious risks of a campfire, especially when children are present. Before building the fire, the area around the fire should be cleared of logs, large rocks and anything else that may cause a person to trip. Parents should closely watch children and forbid them from running or playing near the fire. A 10-foot circle around the fire should be cleared of any flammable objects, including vegetation. Fires should only be built in fire rings that are on level surfaces to decrease the chances of injury or the fire spreading.

It is important that you make certain that the campfire is fully extinguished before leaving the fire or going to sleep. Large chunks of wood will burn for a long period of time and should not be added to the fire late at night. When putting the fire out, you should knock the wood down flat on the ground. Water should be poured over the fire and the coals and wood turned on the wet ground to extinguish both sides. Only after the fire is cool to the touch is it safe to be left alone.

Whether it’s a campfire or a home furnace, a little bit of fire damage prevention can help to ensure a safe experience. However, the fire damage experts here at SERVPRO of Brunswick are ready to help if your home or other structure is damaged by fire.

How to Prepare Your Home or Business for Potential Flood Damage

9/19/2017 (Permalink)

Water Damage How to Prepare Your Home or Business for Potential Flood Damage Prepare your home now to avoid costly repairs later!

Flood damage can lead to minor repairs, or it can leave a business or home with tremendous devastation. Since you can't know what is going to happen until after the flood, preparing for the worst is best.

Consider the Electric

When water and electric mix, a major, potentially fatal, hazard can arise. If you are concerned about flood waters getting into the electric, you should have a professional consultation to find out what you can do to minimize the potential for risk.

Use Sandbags

While small sandbags are unlikely to stop all of the damage that a major flood can cause, they can be of assistance, especially if the flood is of a lesser severity. Sandbags can help to keep the water contained to one room or one part of the business or home. Even if a flood does find its way into the lower level of the company or house, you might be able to keep it there.

Make Repairs

Some problems in the construction of your business building or house might make the space more susceptible to floods. For example, uneven ground or a poor drainage system could lead to greater problems. Before the next flood comes to town, have these issues repaired. You may need to contact the landlord if you do not own the property.

Move Important Items

If you can store important items in another facility, one that is better protected against floods, then consider that option. When that is not a possibility, you should move important items, such as products, files or furniture, to higher ground. By moving these items to a different floor of the space, you are taking a step toward protecting them from the floods.

Evacuate the Building

You may hear that a flood warning or watch is in effect for your area. Taking these weather reporters seriously is of utmost importance. In the event that you keep your employees working through the weather conditions, you may discover that you are all trapped in the flood. Discussing evacuation routes and emergency-notification systems with your employees and family members should be a common procedure in your workplace or home.

Some floods cause devastating damage for both humans and structures. When you want to take precautions against major damage where you live or where you work, you should follow some basic protocols and advice for doing so. However, if there is water damage to your home or business, give SERVPRO of Brunswick a call. Our highly-trained team will complete a damage assessment and get your back to normal as soon as possible.

5 Tips for Dealing with Water Damage from a Leaking Roof

9/11/2017 (Permalink)

Water Damage 5 Tips for Dealing with Water Damage from a Leaking Roof Don't get caught in a downpour in your home! Check your roof for leaks before and after a storm hits.

The rain is coming down and you have a roof leak. It wasn't there last time the rain came through, but it sure is there now. Hopefully, you caught it as a minor drip instead of a major leak. If you sustained water damage from that leak, you need to take steps to contain the damage and start getting this right.

5 Tips for Dealing with Water Damage from a Leaking Roof

  • Deal with the water. Leaks usually pool on the nearest horizontal surface.
  • Locate the location of the leak. Get up into the attic to find where the water is getting in. It may be right above where the water is pooling, or it may be higher in the roof line. It could be near a vent or chimney opening as those are vulnerable locations for water leaks. If possible, get a bucket under the leak point, that will prevent any further damage to the ceiling below.
  • Make temporary repairs if possible. If you can access the roof safely, draping a tarp over the leak can help prevent water from getting inside. If you cannot access the roof safely, use roof tape or cement to patch the hole. That will provide a temporary patch to keep the water out until the roofer arrives.
  • Call in the pros.

Get Your HVAC Ready for Autumn with These Tips

9/11/2017 (Permalink)

General Get Your HVAC Ready for Autumn with These Tips Autumn is almost here. Make sure your home is ready for the new season.

The cooler breezes of autumn are starting to make their presence known. Now is the time to make sure your HVAC systems are ready to handle these cooler breezes. That way, you, your family and your home will remain comfortable as the weather cools down. Here are some tips to make sure your HVAC systems can handle the change.

  • Get a tune-up. Just like a car, your heating and cooling systems need regular maintenance to keep running smoothly and efficiently. The HVAC technician will inspect the system, make adjustments, and ensure the system is ready for autumn. This tune-up will help your system run efficiently, whether you are running the A/C or the heat. It will also help keep your energy bills under control.
  • Check and change your filters. Modern heating and cooling systems need a clean, steady flow of air to run efficiently. Filters help clean the air, but they can become clogged over time. You need to check the filters monthly and change them out as needed. This will ensure your system runs efficiently and without strain.
  • Check your outside unit. Here in Georgia, a lot of people have heat pumps to handle both heating and cooling. That means somewhere around your home there may be an outside unit. Autumn leaves can clog these outside units. Take time to remove leaves and debris. Then do a quick inspection to make sure there is no damage.
  • Get your thermostat programming up to date. Autumn has its ups and downs in temperature. Your thermostat needs to be set properly to keep your home comfortable. Update your programmable thermostat as needed. If you don't have such a thermostat, now is the time to get one installed.
  • Clean your ductwork. Summertime brings plenty of dust and pollen into the home, and subsequently into your home's ductwork. If you were to take a look in your ducts, you would likely see a layer of dust along the duct walls. That means every time the system turns on, the dust and pollen get distributed throughout the house. A periodic cleaning can remove that debris and make the entire system work better. On top of that, you get cleaner air throughout the winter.

These tips will help you get ready for the cooler months ahead. If you want to learn more about cleaning the ductwork in your home, give us a call here at SERVPRO of Brunswick.

Prevent Window Frost

It's not only important to stay warm, but it's also important to stay warm safely. Be mindful that burning charcoal produces carbon monoxide and shouldn't be done in an enclosed area without a proper venting system.
